Applying to Canada

Can anyone explain the procedure for an international for applying to a university in canada?

You should check out the official websites of the schools that you are intended to apply. Because the procedure is a bit different from schools to schools.

But mostly the procedure follows that of American Universities. You need some kind of standardized tests depending on where you are from, and they also look at GPA, recommendation from teachers (not the counsellors’ though) and mid-year report. Some requires an essay for admission, but this again, varies from schools to schools. Extra-curricular(EC) activities are not really important for admission.

I myself only applied to McGill. It doesn’t require an essay for admission, nor does it look at my EC. But if you want to apply for scholarship, it does require both. And it looks at the mid-year report before it makes decision, unlike UBC. coz some of my classmates already got offers from UBC before they send the mid-year reports.

So my rec is, first find out which schools you are interested in, and then go look at their requirement. It’s hard to summarize the procedure coz they vary. But if you are also applying to American schools, the procedure shouldn’t be a problem because it is much simpler.

For universities in Ontario, you apply via [Welcome to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre](http://www.ouac.on.ca). They will forward your applications to the relevant universities…so you don’t have to fill out 10 application forms. Outside of Ontario, you visit the university’s websites.
