As you can guess from my screen name, my daughter goes to McGill and is very happy with the school and city of Montreal. McGill (and I believe most larger Canadian schools) do not even look at EC's. They go by a strict calculation of standarized test scores, class rank and gpa. The application takes about 10 minutes and requires no ec's, essays or letters of recommendation.

The applicants scores are all placed in a computer and ranked against the other applicants with the top qualifications being admitted. You do need ec's and essays for the few scholorships available.

But, check out each schools own specific requirements. Most everything is done on-line now.

Mcgilldad - mcgill does not require recommendations? I assumed they would have forms after the end of the application online avaliable. Interesting. (I am in the middle of the application right now, had to check some info with my counselor before I finish). I wonder how I never heard about that considering I visited the school and practically live on their (not so good) website. Thanks for that info hehe

they require rec's only if you plan to receive the basic entrance scholarship of 3000 i think. if you have significant leadership activities they would want to know to consider awarding a major scholarship if you apply for it.

From what I've read on Canadian and American university websites, it seems like with Canadian universities, all you really need for admissions is your test scores/grades (there are a few exceptions, such as Queens). If you are applying for a scholarship, however, you will need the teacher recommendations, ECs, etc.

frozennet, what schools are you applying to? OUAC is only for the Ontario schools, and after you submit that you may need to fill out school-specific applications (I know this is the case for Queen's). About a month after OUAC is processed, you will receive instructions in the mail from Queen's about the next step. There are some short essay questions for Queen's and Queen's does ask about EC's and work exp. on their app. McGill has its own applications and essay questions depend on what program you are applying for.

BTW, everything is described on line for each school and what is needed. I believe recommendations are required. Also, you will be selecting degree program(s) on your Canadian applications. They conveniently allow you to pick a first choice, second choice program.
