Applying to CAS instead of COE, anyone want to chance me for CAS? (Chem)

Hi guys,

I recently (2 minutes ago) decided to apply to CAS instead of COE because I didn't like the research that was currently being done at COE, and their curriculum does not interest me as much. The research I have been working on for a year is currently being done at CAS in the chem department, so I can easily write a much better essay for CAS than COE.

However, I'm not sure how competitive CAS admissions are..would someone like to tell me how I would fare?

Pretty competitive school, usually send 3-4 to HYPSM, 8-9 more to Ivies and 10 more to other top schools

So far for our grade, 2 kids have gotten into Brown, 1 Columbia, 1 Cornell, 1 Duke, 2 Chicago

GPA (Weighted, school doesn't calculate unweighted): 4.504
Class rank: 20/538 = top 3.7%
Freshman: 4 As 3 Bs
Sophomore: 5 As 2Bs
Junior 6As 1 B
Senior All As

-Taking most rigorous curriculum in grade... will graduate with 11-12 ap exam scores
-Taking Quantitative Analysis II/B at university- achieved highest grade in class, produced research paper (INDEPENDENT research)- **9 hours of class a week
-Will take MultiVar Calc

-Vassar Book award, High Honors every quarter of high school, AP Scholar with Distinction, FLHS, NHS, SHS, NSHSS

AP: 4 Bio, 4 Stat, 5 Calc AB, 5 Calc BC, 5 Chem, 5 Comp, 3 APUSH (lol)

ACT: 34 Comp: 36 M, 34S, 32 R, 33E 10 Essay (got 12 essay on a previous testing)
^Might be 35 superscore, need to wait for December results..

SAT 2: 800 Math 2, 780 Chem

EC (Very brief, I consider this by far the strongest part of my app):
-250+ hours of research in 2 year time period, produced 3 research papers, 1 of them will be submitted for publication (huge time commitment)
-1800-2000+ hours of table tennis training, practice. Ranked nationally (#32 for 16yr olds), #2 junior in state, won multistate tournaments, club champion, MIT kids team 4th place, pres + founder of club at school

Can be on A team at Cornell, talked to president..

-Sci bowl, B team captain 11th, A team captain 12th. Our team has placed top 10 in states each year and our A team has won states 2 times
-Math Team (A team 11+12, 5 people on A team, 50 on B team), 3rd highest scoring junior award in league, qualified for states (CSAML), qualified for new englands (NEAML), A team got 1st in league, 3rd in state, 10 in new englands
-VP + co captain of chess team, 10th grade and 11th glastonbury champion, our team got 1st place in both years, taught chess to kids over summer at library
-Proctored at state and chapter math counts for 4 years, tutored kids for 3 years
-250+ hours of community service

Some other minor things..

Recs:
Calc BC teacher- pretty decent
AP Chem Teacher- Very strong
Guidance Rec: Very strong

Common App Essay: Pretty good
Supplement for Cornell: Will be excellent

Thanks for input

^ugh…now I’m not sure if I should go with COE or CAS, so hard to decide!

Why dont you try to get recruited? Your chances are as good as they can get.

If Cornell was your #1 choice, why didn’t you apply ED?

^Who said it was my #1 Choice? Cornell isn’t my #1 choice, but I’d love to attend there.

My top choices are Berkeley (CoC) or Columbia (SEAS)

News Flash, Banned: While table tennis may be the 2nd most popular sport in the world, table tennis isn’t even recognized as a sport in America. In short, they don’t recruit for table tennis.

^ What really? I love table tennis lol I’m pretty good at, always thought it was an actual sport. But yeah your chances are as great as they can be at Cornell.

Same goes for UC Berkley and Columbia SEAS.

Right…but can you help me decide if I should apply to CoE or CAS?

Reasons for not applying to CoE:

 1. I’m not a big fan of essay (minor reason)
 2. The research currently being done there does not interest at me (major reason)
 3. Apparently harder to get in here than CAS? (Very minor reason)

Reasons for applying to CoE:

 1. Description fits me perfectly…
 2. ChemE ftw

Reasons for applying to CAS:

 1. Great, great chem cirriculum
 2. Chem research is fantastic, goes hand in hand with what I’ve done
 3. Good essay topic

Reasons for not applying to CAS:

 1. 20+ people from my school are currently applying to Cornell, most, if not all, are applying to CAS
 2. Cornell’s Arts and Sciences program (for chem) isn’t as good as it’s engineering
 3. I do not want to take a history class.
 4. My application seems more geared towards Engineering than pure research? Idk. I like math. :p

Yeah, that’s what I said, haha.

Thanks for the help.

COE, it’s where I’m also applying RD, better for premeds (not sure if your intrested in premed), well balance research and great cirriculum, moreover 20 plus people applying to CAS doesnt work in your favor considering that you’re from a very competitive school.

You can however apply to both via primary and alternate choices.

What is that??? Will that affect my chances at admission? Or will I be viewed separately for both schools?
