Chance a junior please - CAS

I'm a junior and I've already had a chance thread but this one has some new info.

I am applying to CAS. I am interested in business but I feel like Cornell has a great CAS program that would allow me to further explore my interests. I am not 100% sure that business is my forte. I feel like being in CAS and taking business classes in the other 6 colleges would be perfect for me.

Letters of recommedation
1. Calc teacher (hopefully good but nothing spectacular)
2. History teacher (he really likes me so this one should be pretty damn good)
3. Guidance counselor (I've been sucking up to him for a while lol =))

projects/research
1. I did a historical research project with my hist teacher. He said he will write a letter to colleges explaining how I have contributed

summer:
1. prefrosh --> Camp counselor
2. freshmen --> Camp counselor
3. sophomore --> Camp counselor
4 junior --> Cornell summer college (3 week program)
4b. junior --> Camp counselor
*Camp counselor = volunteer job and I believe I have accumulated about 300hrs over the past 4 years

other information:
- my high school doesn't rank students but in the profile they send to colleges, i am probably in the top 45% cluster
- my school sends about 20 people to cornell every year (the whole class is about 350 students)
- since sophomore year I have been taking a ton of business classes to learn about the stock/bond market, investing, entrepreneurship, marketing, advertising, etc.

what I am very worried about:
1. VERY few awards (and none are impressive at all)
2. No real job...ever... except babysitting for my neighbors
3. I am wondering if the adcoms are going to look down on the fact that I am showing an interest for business but not applying to AEM. (I explained why I am doing this in the first few sentences)
4. My ECs are mainly during 11th and 12th grades

So what are my chances? Thanks so much.

Multivariate is an AP now? Wow, if that’s correct, then College Board finally stepped up a notch.

No that’s a mistake lol

Aww, and here I was getting my hopes up.

Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

It’s definitely not.

You seem pretty good.

Things that i’m sure will really help.

A bit a variety with EC’s, not sure if you play any sports but that won’t hurt. Also, you might, if possible want to get a President/Vice position in there somewhere.

The research things, eh…not totally sure if they put much if any weight on it. I personally did research on 'Iron-Deficiency Anemia" and it was pretty comprehensive but i was still encouraged to not add excess. I also asked my interviewer if they allowed freshman to research with professors. She said yes but it’s not encouraged. So you can add it, but don’t hope for much change in a decision by research.

If you want to dive into ‘business’ and applying to AEM, then it’s fine. You stated you gave a reason why so it should be ‘a ok.’ I know someone who majored in English and was in CAS all four years.

To the ‘no real job’ and ‘very few awards’: Is there a reason. If you’ve haven’t had an interview, when you do, then just give him/her an explanation. Try and snag a few awards as soon as possible, i’m sure your working on something. About the job thing, i was at at Fordham University and the dean of Syracuse was talking about how people worry about how ‘no real job experience’ can hurt them. Coincidentally, she brought up this topic about how a student sacrificed most of his time babysitting his cousin. She said it was a marvelous story to tie it up in a nutshell because it showed great compassion and how much a student would sacrifice for his sibling.

That’s just one scenario in which it can play in your favor.

Hope it all goes well!

Yeah… unfortunately I don’t play sports at my HS. I don’t have any Pres positions but I founded two clubs that I feel very strongly about… which is like Pres? I don’t know what I would put on the app.

Should I just not include my teacher’s letter?

Not really sure what you mean. Are you saying it’s okay that I want to go to CAS rather than AEM?

School work is overwhelming… so I don’t have that much of a reason. And no excuse for the awards lol… but you are right - I am working on that although I am sure I won’t achieve anything impressive by app time.

Thanks so much for you advice fasinro!!

Your welcome.

Sorry about the AEM thing, i was probably mixing things up.

And yeah, being a Founder is something like a President position. I was emphasizing the ‘President’ position thing because in my school, elections are sometimes held and people can be actually elected president. I’m guessing if they don’t do that, then there’s no opportunity of moving up the ladder but being a founder is just as impressive.

Also, as a founder, make sure you emphasize how much progress you’ve made with your organization.

For the research,include it, depending on how much credit your teacher gives you on his/her recommendation. If it’s even partially stellar, include it. If it’s leaning to the ‘he was just at the site’ side, then you might just want to leave it out. But site it. For example, include it in an essay just briefly so it won’t go to waste.

(also forgot you were a junior, and obv haven’t gotten an interview…very tired, so i’m thinking differently lol)

Well, just try to get some, any additional award(s)…even mentioning nominations won’t hurt but only for something recognized as important. I represented my school in a tournament and was elected team captain of my school team. We didn’t make it to the finals but we did well. I didn’t include our unsuccessful loss but submitted my app in time to say that we ‘recently’ made it to the semi’s. So lets say your nominated for something and you (hopefully not) lose the position of competition, try not to include that. But highlight you success prior.

i won’t encourage trying to find a job quickly just to add on your app so don’t worry about it. You seem like you have ‘alot’ on your plate as is.

Good Luck.

You have really good academics and EC’s. I think you are a low reach to a match

thanks guys
