I am applying to many schools, but some of my top schools are: Brown, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Johns Hopkins, University of Washington, and I may apply to Harvard or some other Ivy Leagues just for fun :) Of course, I'll apply to some for-sure schools as well. I am not the top student, athletic captain, etc.

I have a 3.5 gpa, rank 71 out of 438 (top 20%)
My first SAT was a 1920, but I am retaking them
Still need to take SAT II, but I know I'll do well
I am heavily involved in DECA, a marketing organization (executive officer, state competitor, etc), as well as a member of several other clubs
I have a job
I will have very strong recommendations from my teachers
My essay will be very strong. I am working with a teacher who has experience on admissions boards.

Also, my aunt goes to Stanford and is a senior. She was a recruited athlete, and I've been told relatives go a long way at these schools (not sure how true it is, but I've been told). So, all that said, I know that I am not a top candidate, but do I have a shot? What are my chances? Thanks!

If you have a high GPA, like a 4.0, and you get a 1920 on the SAT, and ranked in the top 10%, you have a chance at these schools, because despite your low SAT, you had a pretty good GPA, and you were ranked in the top 10 percent.

But what do colleges think when they see a high gpa, and low SAT? They’ll assume your courses were really easy.

You could get into one of these schools with a 3.5, but you’d need a SAT of about 2200,
why?

When colleges see a high SAT score, and an ok GPA, they assume your classes were really hard.

College admission officers no longer have time to recalculate GPA’s, so they just look at you GPA next to your SAT score.

you will not get into Stanford,or John Hopkins.

if you can get a 2100+ on the SAT,

you have an ok chance at Brown, but Brown is interested in unique kids more then anything, so your essays would have to STAND OUT.

If you don’t retake your SAT, you won’t get into Brown.

Sorry, but a current recruited-athlete-aunt is not going to help your case. Maybe a parent who has faithfully donated for decades could help.

Your class rank and GPA are too low, and you will need all the SATs in the 700s+, both I and IIs. IF you return with 750+ on all tests, then you have the usual 9% chance.
