Applying to Elliott vs. Columbian Schools

Hello,

I'm applying for admissions to GWU for the Fall 2012 and I know that I want to double major across the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and the Elliott School (probably IA and German). On the Common App, however, it asks you to apply to a certain school, so I was wondering :
1) Is it even possible to double major in these two schools?
2) If so, is there a big difference in acceptance rate between the colleges? Ie, which one would it be better to apply to? Right now, I think I'm more interested in the IA at Elliott for my first/primary major, but I wasn't sure if my chances of admission would be better at Columbian.

Thanks!!

I can’t answer your first question, but I can answer the second. Recently I’ve been emailing back and forth with the admissions officer for my region, and he said that the acceptance rate is the same for all schools, including Elliott.

Concur with above post that the overall acceptance rates are simliar between ESIA’s and CCAS - so don’t let that be a deciding factor.

It does kind of make a difference which college you applt to since that will be your “home” college/major for 4 yrs. If you select Elliott and major in IA - it’s very simple to double major in CCAS. You would only need to meet the 2nd major requirements and not the Columbian “General Requirements” which helps.

There some 2nd majors Elliott will not allow - e.g. Engineering, SMPA.

What major are you considering for your Columbian major? If it’s German I would definitely recommend your Primary major be in elliott and 2nd major in Columbian - German.

My 2 cents

Hey! I am currently a freshman and I am double majoring in German and Political science. I have spoken to administrators about your exact same situation because i originally was double majoring in German and International affairs. The acceptance rate does not change however the requirements from both schools are different. They told me that I would be able to double major out of both schools as long as both requirements from both schools are met. I would say that there are benefits to applying to either one. If you apply to elliot, you would be applying to your primary major’s school. If you apply to Columbian and say that your major is German, its a rare sight to see so it could boost your chances. you can email me if you have questions. Kimscott@gwmail.gwu.edu

I’m almost 100% sure that if you are an IA Major in Elliott and wish to double major in CCAS - you only have to fulfill Elliott’s General Requirements - NOT both Elliott and CCAS.

Wow, thank you all so much for the quick reply and valuable information! I’m fairly certain I’ll be applying to Elliot now, though I’m excited for both programs.

everything they said is completely true, Columbian vs Elliot, there is no big difference.

University Average:
-SAT: 1300/1960 (660,640,660)
-ACT: 29
-Percentage Accepted: 31.69%
-Percentage in Top Ten of Class: 74%

Columbian College:
-SAT: 1300/1970 (660,650,660)(m,v,w)
-ACT: 29
-Percentage Accepted: 31.31%
-Percent in Top Ten of Class: 74%

Elliot School
-SAT: 1310/1990 (650,660,670)(m,v,w)
-ACT: 29
-Percentage Accepted: 32.10%
-Percent in Top Ten of Class: 75%

Here is sum imperial data reported that college backing up the claim that between Elliot and Columbian, it would not make a difference. Elliot does have a slightly higher test/gpa scores but it isn’t very negligible.
