When I applied via the commonapp, I didn't have a choice of which school to apply to. I got into the Columbian School but I was looking to go to Elliott (I set my interested major as IA). I called the UGrad Admissions office and they told me to make an internal transfer. If I get into Elliott, will me classes be different from those that I would take at Columbian? I mean, won't I only be taking IA from my junior year? Or am I mistaken? Someone please help!

I feel that first year it mostly comprises of General Ed classes, so I don’t think it would be that much of change.
Also, GW is really easy to transfer. But I think you can transfer second semester of freshman year of first semester of soph year.

That’s odd. My daughter applied to the Elliott School via the Common App. No problem.

Don’t recall the details–if I ever knew them at all–but it is possible to use the Common App to apply to Elliott.

I hope this all works out for you, Oskar.

The requirements for each school differ slightly and for IA you will have to have certain classes. Other than that, you can mostly take any class you want regardless of what school you are in.

That’s kind of a relief as I really don’t want to reacquaint myself with everything one semester into college.

Yeah, I find it kind of odd. I put my interest as IA under the assumption that it automatically puts me under the Elliott school applicants.

Can I apply as soon as I get to GW? Or is that not allowed? I want to establish myself at Elliott as soon as possible. I personally hate change :(

To OP

You must have made an error on the common app - my “S” used the CA and applied directlt to Elliott and was accepted to ESIA. Regardless - you can change even before you start - you have to do this via petition and send to Ugrad Admissions. they should help you with this.

The curricula are different - CCAS just changed all of their GenEd requirements this year - actually lowered the amount needed and decreased the language requirements. whereas IA/ESIA’s has more language requirements.

Follow the link above posted by CJ Madison. ESIA has very specific prerequisites beginning in the freshman year. For instance you have an Econ sequence, Intro to International Affairs, Poly Sci, World History, etc in addition to UW required of all freshman at GW. You also need to be thinking about your language sequence.

It is all spelled out on the website. You don’t want to wait until sophomore or junior year to start thinking about how you are going to meet the requirements.

Great! I got in! I have 4 years of Russian and got a 4 on my World History AP course. Do my credits transfer over and leave me room in my course load?

Your AP will transfer and count. Unless you have college credit for any language years, you will still have to take language courses at GW. The good new is you can choose to stick with Russian and maybe start at a lower level, or build where you left off.

To Oskar

Your “4 years of Russian” will definitely help toward Elliott’s language requirement for the IA major.

You won’t get any AP Credit for the Russian but you will likely be able to place higher in the Russian Language starting block. You will take a placement exam so you’ll know what level of Russian to register for. Hopefully, you’ll be able to complete the “6” semester requirement for foreign language sooner.

You should look into the logistics of taking the Russian placement exam - usually given during freshman orientation.

Ah, I see. So assuming I start at a higher level of Russian and finish earlier, does that leave me with extra credit space I can fill with another language? I am really interested in learning Korean.

Correct - “extra” language courses would be considered electives. Please note this comment is for the International Affairs Major. If you major in Middle east Studies or Asian Studies, or Latin American Studies - your Russian won’t count for the major. In which case - you might want to “bag” Russian and start with Korean.

You should contact your Elliott Adivisor if that’s the case.
