applying to Illinois

Ive heard that you have to apply to a certain college? and they all have different standards to get in (esp. Engineering)
I defiantly want to go into business when im older, but i don't think my grades are good enough to get in however...If I apply/get into LAS or General studies Is it wise to try and get into business after a year at LAS or General Studies? And how do the colleges/majors at Illinois work? If i switch does that mean i need to do a ton of work in 3 years at the business college?

Sorry if my question is confusing =p

Your application is for a designated major (or no real major for General Studies), which are controlled by applicable colleges, and thus is for a specific college, and each has its own standards for admission, e.g., you generally need higher class rank/test score for engineering and business than you do for LAS. Also, business, more than any others, considers essays and ECs to be very important. You can attempt to transfer from one college to another after first (or second year -- in fact as to transfers the engineering and business colleges prefer after second year) but that new college will have to agree to your admission and business is the most difficult one to transfer to. As for courses, regardless of which college you enter, you would need to take those typically taken by a freshman in the college to which you are planning to attempt to transfer.

What are your GPA & ACT, just so we have something to work with.

Here are the stats for admitted students last year:
Liberal Arts/Science (LAS): ACT of 26-31
Business: ACT of 28-32
Engineering: ACT of 30-33

More info can be found here: U of I Admissions: Freshman Admission Requirements

Basically, it's obvious that Engineering is the hardest school to get into, which makes sense, because it's the jewel of Illinois. Business is rather hard to get into also; but LAS isn't that hard to get into.

If you're interested in Business, simply apply for a spot in the College of Business when you apply, and if you don't get into Business, you might be offered a spot in LAS. From there, you can transfer into Business, but it'll take some hard work.

My gpa in freshman year was around a 2.8...
sophomore year i got it to around a 3.3
Junior year...say i work for a 3.6ish
(this is at a small private school, ranked #1 in my county)

ACT this year i took it, as a sophomore and got a 21, i plan to raise it by 3 points next year.

Gpa is my biggest/ kindof only concern

I do tons of EC's, Ill have 30+ volunteer hours by the end of high school, etc etc

GPA though, remains my concern...from freshman year when i didnt take anything seriously

Large state universities, especially UIUC, do not consider ECs as much as your GPA and test scores. So you need to raise your ACT upto around 26-31 to have a chance at UIUC's LAC. Now, your GPA doesn't look that pretty at this moment but do your best to pull it up every semester.

To sum up, you should definitely apply to LAC because you'll have way more chance of getting accepted. Once you get in, you can always transfer to a different college within UIUC but be aware that it won't be easy. Good luck!

GPA definitely isn't your biggest concern, but your ACT is. at least your GPA is on an upward trend, which is a good thing, and hopefully you'll be able to hold a nice 3.7 cumulative by winter, senior year.

are you a minority? black/hispanic will help you out.

basically, try to get your ACT to at least 26. this will take a lot of studying and hard work, but it isn't impossible. if you can get a 26, at least you'll be viable for LAS.

typo

I got a 27******************************

And I can get it up to a 30. With another year of preparation for it, and ill be a junior when I take it a second time.

oh - heh heh. well then, 27 should have u set for LAS, but you never know..
