Applying to Master's and PhD Program at same school

I am curious as to whether I can apply to both a Master's and PhD program for computer science in the same university. I am split between getting a Master's and PhD, and I do not want to make a decision until I have all my options out on the table. Will a single department allow me to apply separately for both programs, without giving me a disadvantage in the admissions process?

If you’re not sure that you want to do a PhD, don’t apply. The worst thing that could happen is you ending up doing something you hate during the best years of your life.

As to your question, it’ll probably differ depending upon the department and the school, but I can’t see how it wouldn’t affect your chances regarding the PhD. A PhD is a 5+ year commitment where professors are sinking upward of 60k a year (tuition and stipend) on your training. These same professors are also the ones who have a say in who gets in, and if they think there’s a good chance for you to quit halfway, they’ll reconsider letting you in. They still might let you into the master’s program, however.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!
