double application

can one apply both mstp and phd-only to a single school?

Some schools will allow you to apply simultaneously to multiple departments, some will even encourage it, but others will not - pick one and go with it. Where it is allowed, no one will care if you apply for a masters in one department and a PhD in another.

I have never heard of a department that will allow people to apply simultaneously to a masters and PhD program at the same time. The focus is so different between programs that it is not acceptable to be so unfocused during the application process. If you want the PhD but are willing to “settle” for the masters, contact the department and see how you should address that - some departments award masters admissions to their almost-admitted PhD applicants.

By mstp, he means MD/PhD, not masters.

Ahhhhh.

No idea then.

It certainly can be done, but you should check with each individual school you wish to apply to since some care more than others. The down side is that you’ll have to go through the standard channels for each: AMCAS for MSTP, and the PhD program’s specific application (which means taking the GRE too). Timing may be an issue as well. If you get in to MSTP at one school, but would be happier with even PhD-only at some other school, you may not get the April 15th decision time frame from the first school for your decision.

Tangentially, I used to have the same question. Make sure you ask yourself why you really want the MD if you’re open to just getting the PhD. I eventually decided that I would be happier going into a PhD program that would offer much of the same classroom knowledge (biomedical sciences) as the medical school curriculum, but wouldn’t “waste” my time with lots of things that weren’t going to be relevant.
