Applying to multiple schools in Cal Poly?

When applying to Cal Poly, it is required you pick your major right away. However, the problem is I don't know if I should choose the school of engineering or the school of architecture! Having a 29 ACT composite score and a 4.1 GPA, I don't know if I can make it into the college of engineering. But if I don't, can I also apply to the school of architecture as a back up?

Hopefully that makes sense.. Thanks for the help guys!!

(I'm not completely sure if this question belongs here.. but thanks for your help anyway!)

The college application sometimes asks you to indicate a 2nd major if you don’t get into the first program, check the application and ask the admissions office. Best of luck!

there is a spot for your “alternate major”

29 ACT and 4.1 GPA should be good enough for either Cal Poly engineering or architecture, so no worries there.

Cal Poly really emphasizes selecting a major from the beginning and its really hard to change, especially in engineering. Talk to your councilor, teachers, friends, acquaintances, and parents about which Major is best for you (anyone and everyone reliable). Hopefully they will help you figure out whats best for you.

I also found it really helpful when trying to decide this by using Process of Elimination. When you really think about what you do and do not want to do, process of elimination really helps to narrow down your choices, hopefully to your 1 preferred major.

Here is the deal. Apply for one major with an alternate. However, be real clear what general area that you want. It is relatively easy to switch from general engineering to mechanical engineering (like my kid) or most engineering majors to other engineering majors because they are in the same college. You must also make the choice within the first year or so before you get too set on one track and have to stay for too long. You must also meet minimum GPA requirements, etc. However, it is extremely challenging to go from let’s say music major to engineering. These types of transfers are difficult if not impossible. If you are an engineer and want to go into another college, I hear that your chances are better as the engineering college is the hardest to get into – but this is anecdotal.

This is a good place to start and be aware that each department has its own change of major requirements. Dig deep into the web site and all your questions will be answered.
