Applying to NYU, BU, Northwestern, and Cornell as a Sophomore Transfer

Hi, I'm currently a freshman at St. John's University with a major in Biology. I want to know if its worth it to apply to these colleges or wait another year to transfer in as a junior.
College GPA:
1st Semester: 3.7 but dropped 1 class, so had 3 classes 12 credits combined
2nd Semester: Expecting a 3.8-4.0 from the looks of my midterm grades, 16 credits combined

Highschool GPA: 3.0 Unweighted, 3.5 Weighted. Graduating Class size over 900. Very competitive school.
I did very well throughout highschool until my senior year due to something that happened to me unfortunately which resulted in me failing a bunch of classes throughout the year, probably around 4-5 classes. Didn't graduate in time and had to take summer classes. My essay explaining the reasoning behind it should cover the jist of the situation.

SAT Scores:
English: 590
Math: 760
Writing: 650

AP Courses:
AP Chemistry - 4
AP Calculus AB - 5
AP courses were very difficult to take in my high school as you needed a 92-100 average to even be considered in taking an AP course.

Extracurriculars:
J/V Tennis Team
Over 400 community service hours in local hospitals/clinics, AIDS/HIV awareness associations
Worked at a local pharmacy as a translator for the old/non-linguistic Chinese customers
Key Club Member

So what do you guys think? Should I take my chances and still apply or wait until I finish another year of college and transfer as a junior? I know that if I stay I can continue to get great grades here but I'm also being pressured by my parents to transfer to these top tier schools. What I'm afraid of right now is that I did terrible in my last year of high school and that could bring down my chances significantly since I'm applying as a sophomore transfer. I'm also worried about the class that I dropped. Will it affect my application significantly? It was a core class called Discover New York that I wasn't really interested in and I thought that it would probably be worth nothing if I was to transfer.

You missed Cornell’s deadline :/

Ahh damn maybe I’ll just submit it late. My chances to getting there are pretty low right now I think anyway.

You can just apply again next year if you get rejected, but I doubt you will get into any of them except BU.

Apps due March 1 can be submitted until 11:59PM on March 1, so in theory you could do that one today. It’s a long shot but possible.

It would be great if I get into BU. Hell, its a lot better than being in St. John’s. What do you think of my chances of getting into BU?

Not bad as long as you’re not looking for financial aid.

Yeah money isn’t a problem for me at all.

Why don’t you try for Penn? Their due date is March 15th… I think you would have a shot. Are those your only extracurriculars?

BTW, the average gpa for Penn transfers is 3.8-4. based on your stats, your chance for penn is 1%. You have a shot, but VERY LOW. BU is your only school that you may get in.

I can’t remember any other extracurriculars from the top of my head but I wasn’t very involved school-wise back when I was in high school. Was a long time key club member but never held any positions.

Penn, really?

As a soph transfer with:

3.0 HS gpa
3.7 college gpa w/a light load
590 CR

The others are unlikely, and Penn is a waste of money.

I’m probably only interested in NYU and BU at this point so you guys think I have a good shot at these two?

I’d wait and establish your standing as a college student a little better. Even if you decide to apply somewhere like, say, Penn now, you’ll be rushed and things won’t go as smoothly as they would had this been a month or two ago.
