Applying to PhD Programs in Communications

am currently a first year grad student at Miami U (Ohio). I want to pursue a PhD next. I am on a full scholarship right now and have a teaching fellowship as well. I have a 3.93 GPA. I scored just above 1200 on my GREs when I applied for my MA and I know I need to get that score up into the mid/high 1300s to be considered at many top notch PhD programs. I am in a thesis MA program which is a great help in prepping me for a dissertation. I am thinking of applying to:

UPenn-Annenberg (Total Reach!!)
UNC Chapel Hill
UMass Amherst (safety)
Ohio State (safety)
Purdue
UMD
Northwestern (reach)
Columbia (another reach)

I plan to have several presentations/panels at national conferences by the time I graduate and am hoping to co-publish a paper with a faculty member here. I am also spending 6 weeks in London working at the BBC and other media companies this summer (Internship).

What are my chances for a PhD? I would REALLLY like to get into the high 1300s on my GREs. I am horrific in math...I never paid attention in Algebra or Geometry so I am horrible. Is it worth it to take the $1000 Kaplan review course?

im thinking of applying to grad programs (MA only right now) in communications/social sciences. Which grad prog are u pursuing right now? MA in Comm.?

Also, what exactly are the career options if one only does an MA in this field and not PhD?
