Applying to Prep School!!!

Yes, choate did that last year as well. Lawrencville will also make available their decisions on line. March 10th

I only have one friend who went to Middlesex so can't say much, but he loved it. As mentioned, my boyfriend went to SPS as did many of our friends. From what I can glean, SPS or Groton would be hard. SPS is a bit bigger, has the biggest endowment and has the fewest rules. Groton (I'm biased) is just amazingly intimate, has wonderful alumni participation and fantastic teachers. SPS has the nicer campus and beautiful dorms. Groton has day students so you get some home cooked meals!

Deerfield is beloved by everyone I know who went but I haven't spent much time there. Also a beautiful, cozy campus. Peddie is also much loved. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong and really is about fit. Groton is a bit more intellectual. Deerfield very athletic. SPS the most artsy. All have a good mix of students. Andover and Exeter are more political, less preppy than the others.

Usually kids know which one feels right by the end of revisit weeks. There's the uniform thing that bothers some, lights out rules bother others. Take a hard look!!

I'm applying to Groton, jazz. Though I do know what they say about old new england families- my tour guide was descended from Roosevelt. It turns out that the Roosevelts all went there.

I'm not so worried about school spirit or a 'sense of community'. I realize that for some people, those things are important. I've been homeschooled- some people think that makes it hard to adjust to large settings and for many it is. My experiences have not been. But let me tell you that my 'sense of community' is nonexistent. There is no community.

My interests are as follows- a fabulous education and a great theatre department that can prep me for college and beyond. Don't get my wrong- I'm not averse to any of the things you mentioned, Jazz. But I am extremely focused.

jazzpiano, you took the words right out of my mouth. My interviewer told me pretty much the same things about Exeter/Andover. Both are the most competitive, most debated-in-class-over-trivialness, and most political. My mind: YES!!!

Please share this information with your parents if this is not their email
address.

This year students will have the opportunity to receive individual admission
decisions on line on March 10. We will be sending out more details in the
coming weeks to the email address we have used here. If you would like your
decision to go to a different email address please email
admission@choate.edu. You need not respond to this email if no change is
anticipated.

All decisions will also be sent by mail on March 10, 2005.

^ That;s the Choate email saying they'll email the decision on the 10th. It does go against the 10 school decision rule thing...

By the way, Exeter lets its international applicants access their decision on Lionlinks on March 10th, 9 am EST. That;s what my friend who applied last year said anyway. I haven't received a message like that from exeter though.

It seems like Exeter is the school that everyone applied to this year.
Schools go in and out and I'd say this is the in one this year.

^ True. It seems like everyone posting on this board is applying for Exeter and/or Andover. Practically everyone on this board has gotten mid/high 80's on their SSATs or above... very competitive bunch, we are.

maybe we should ask, what's it about E and A applicants and CC. I know D school apps at record high. Not E or A.

So, do the acceptance letters come in thin envelopes or big fat envelopes?

Big fat/thick envelopes.

Oh, so when it comes outta the mailbox; the decision should be clearly conspicuous...

can you accwss your decision online for other schools?

yep, read above^postings.... choate notifies by email on the 10th, exeter will post on lion links and i think andover will also on the link, "my andover".. not sure about sps or deerfield.

When my son was accepted at Exeter several years ago, he received a big fat envelope that contained an Exeter t-shirt with a ribbon tied around it saying "Congratulations." I think he still has the t-shirt.

Tara, How did you know apps were up 15% at Exeter? Are apps up at all the preps? Anybody have an idea why this would be?

"When my son was accepted at Exeter several years ago, he received a big fat envelope that contained an Exeter t-shirt with a ribbon tied around it saying "Congratulations." I think he still has the t-shirt."

Thats really neat. I want that shirt.Though it'd be kinda weird if they sent you all that, but then you decided not to go.

I'm really going through hell here, trying to decide what schools I want to go to, trying to make the final decision for or against leaving to boarding school. I keep trying to say 'don't think about it until you know if you're admitted," but it doesnt work.

Some people are nervous about getting in, and I am too, but I'm more nervous about the decisions I'll have to make. I hope I'm ready for them.

tj, is staying home for high school still a possibility?

tj, i can relate to all your saying... my grades dropped this semester at school, not by much but enough to alarm my parents. my parents are worried that i may be signaling that i'm not ready for the boarding school scene. it doesnt help matters either that i lied about some stuff.. there on my case about this dishonestly thing that they are really on my back.. most of my friends at school are leaving for private or catholic high school. i'm a nervous wreck worrying about who will accept me at boarding school and then, actually leaving home... sorry for the babbling,, just as anxious ....

I don't know if it's mentioned here but there is a book out that reviews the top 100 boarding schools in the country. It is by Frank Leana (I hope the last name is spelled right). In addition to giving accaptance rates for each school, it also gives matriculation rates. The latter tells you, once the students were accepted (in cases of multiple acceptances), which school they chose to attend (so it is a measure of which schools are considered the most desirable). Good Luck.

I've looked at that book- its really interesting. It kind of gives thoughts on the school other than just stats, which I really liked- like the school's focus.

Prep, I will only stay homeschooled if I dont get into any schools at all. Between you and me, I dont think that will happen. The only way I can conceive of that happening is if the schools in my area have absolutely no openings. It is a possibility.

The problem really comes down to going away to school or staying here. I, as you may remember, am a theatre/acting person. I plan to make it my profession. Here in Raleigh, NC, I've found a fantastic voice teacher (Juilliard, Columbia), not to mention a very good acting teacher who has trained me using a very fine technique. If I go to boarding school, I will lose all that, but gain a fantastic education. If I stay here, I get a pretty good education, and a fantastic theatre education. So what do I do? In reality, I should probably go to boarding school. But that doesnt make the decision to leave the people who I know, like, and some of whom rely upon my lessons to pay their bills.

::sigh:: I wish this was just over.
