Applying to Prep School!!!

Don't overlook the other schools in the league with Peddie- Hill, Mercersburg, Blair, Lawrenceville etc. Excellent academics, athletics and a nice community feel. Blair is a wrestling, basketball and running powerhouse. Mercersburg is a top swimming school.
I agree with the comment that 67% boarding borders on too low. I would look for at least 75%.

Everybody's SSAT scores?

supastar, what do you see as the main difference between Hotchkiss and Deerfield? I looked at both and loved Hotchkiss, especiallly the new gym!! I ddon't think I will apply though. you have to draw the line somewhere and it seemed just a little remote. how hard is it compared to your old school? thanks

My SSAT=91%. Borderline for the top schools without a sport or legacy.

Prepster. Did you look at my post of 11-28 and more importantly follow up uscfan1781's 11-28 suggestion to read ALL of the March-April string? If you did you would know that at SSAT 91 you are not marginal but right smack in the middle of the pack and if you want to go to St. Paul's there is no reason to play Uriah Heep. Tell them why you want to go and hope for the best. The SSAT is used to corroborate your school performance not as the end all be all of deciding who gets in. To my certain knowledge it is possible to have a perfect SSAT score and still not get into these schools. It depends on whether they think you fit, will come, will add to the class musically, artistically etc etc. Your big selling point is that you know where you want to be and why.

Deerfield is a great school and Hotchkiss and Deerfield are actually extremely similar. I have at least 5 good friends who go there and they all went because they said Hotchkiss was too close to home for them. I do not like comparing schools too much, but I heard the Deerfield lower classmen dorms are nicer but Hotchkiss Upperclassmen dorms are better then Deerfields. Academic wise both offer the same courses, though at deerfield not many take more than 5 classes and at hotchkiss I know some people who take 7. Statistic wise I think deerfield SAT's are better, but its only by like 50-100 points. Both schools offer around the same sports and extracurriculars and the social makeup is even very similar. I always think of Deerfield as the Hotchkiss of Massachutes because to me they were so similar.

i got like an 82 on my PSAT or maybe an 86... I'm a bad test taker...

What's your first choice school?

is that question directed at me? if so... no first choice school anymore, because I go to Hotchkiss

esahopeful95 calm down your goin to one of the 3 or 4 schools you applyed to!

I've got an interview with SPS tomorrow, any suggestions?

Do any of you know anything in particular about the Walker Scholarship for African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans? I'm going to apply for it? How hard is it to get?

you probably do not need to apply for a scholarship seperate from the school you want to go to. Most boarding schools are really good with hanging out needed financial aid and if your family needs more just ask. These schools have millions put away to help everyone out.

Sorry, the Walker Scholarship is annually sponsored by SPS.

For people that have been accepted to prep school, what was the size of the envelopes for acceptance and rejections?

hey all - im a junior (freshman) at andover, and i went through all this last year, so feel free to ask questions. i posted a TON on that infamous ssat scores and schools thread last year and it really helped me. ok so you probably want stats, as i did, but realize that its NOT the only thing. i have friends that got in the 60th and 70th percentiles and still go in and thrive at andover. sometimes you just cant tell. anyways i got 97th on reading 96th on verbal and 99th on math and 99th overall. i play competitive soccer and figure skate (and im from iowa, hehe that could be an advantage). i didnt get any rejection letters (which was a biggg confidence boost at the time) and i applied to taft, exeter, andover, choate, and loomis.

queenrosie, i asked dragonreborn the same question. tell us what it is like. Glad you went? How hard is it really? how do you like the kids and do you get homesick? Is it what you expected, better or worse and do you think you picked the right school since you were accepted to so many?

alright, ill answer em all one at a time. I'm so glad i went! andover has already been one of the best experiences of my life and ive only been for a term. it is pretty hard, and im definately not getting all As, but the work is not unmanageable and there ore plenty of recources on campus. The kids are friendly and motivated and theres a lot less drugs and alcohol here then at my public school (basically people just dont have time and are too worried about getting kicked out). I actually never got homesick. THey just keep you running so much. It is actually about what I expected in terms of work (hard), and friendships and camaraderie (amazing). You get to be such better friends with the people that you live with and see twenty four (ish) hours per day than your home friends. I miss them and winter break has only been going on for 72 hours. I think i picked the right school, bu tthen again i would have probably been very happy at any of my three "finalists" (you can probably guess which). I just chose Andover because i had the feeling it was right for me, and i think i've been right so far.

Is Andover really snobbish? Laid back? Compared to Exeter?

No andover and exeter are very good schools. Not snobbish. I prefer Exeter though. Some people choose andover over exeter and exeter over andover!
