Our son accepted at the four schools that he applied to:

Groton, Middlesex, Governor Dummer and Lawrence A.

Stats: 91% SSAT, A student, many ECs with very strong soccer experiences.

We will revisit Groton and Middlesex. Son wants to turn down GDA and LA immediately to free up spots for waiting list kids.

He will be a boarding student but we are fortunate to live nearby so we can attend many of his sporting events, etc.

We also toured and interviewed at Andover & St Pauls and all agreed that they did not fit him as well. We like the smaller school feel and environment.

Great opportunities at all of these schools. Best of luck to all.

iam a parent of a MX student, if you have any ??? you can private message me. it sound's like you may be very familiar already. best to you on the revisits.

SC and esa, i think you may be misinterpreting what peariceparent means. i may be wrong, but i believe you may be incorrect in your assessment of her words.

prepparent: I entirely agree with you and I find the take SC took on peariceparent words gratuitously offensive. The context was a teacher who goes all out to inspire his students. They respond by working their hearts out to make the team 'win'. That is a kind of love, that is what "The Rock" Gillespie stood for at St. Paul's. That is what these places are about. If Esa can't rise above echoing a cheap sexual slur from some snotty kid, maybe he should reconsider whether he even belongs at Exeter or St. Paul's for that matter. This is not trivial, he is so much better than that

"they respond by working their hearts out to make the team win". this is one very good reason we have our children in these schools. paleo, BRAVO! I still believe this was a misinterpretation by our fine young students. right?

I don't know where you go to school now.....but you certainly have a way of twisting a phrase.....perhaps 'thou dost protest too much!! Perhaps you are confusing Exeter with the current scandal at another boarding school. What is your intent.....it seems malicious.

No that was not a misinterpretation at least not by SC but some sophomoric attempt to sound knowing and esa for whom these schools can open up a whole new world as he darn well knows stepped right into it. There are some ground rules at these schools and esa will find any school --certainly Exeter and St. Paul's landing on him feet first if he ever repeats something like this about a revered teacher.

As I recall SC has stated no application to SPS but is choosing Exeter over Andover......do I recall any specific statement about acceptances to ANY school? SC you are in for a real treat at Exeter if you are starting out on this site with statements of the type you recently posted!!

After being rejected by both andover and exeter (plus waitlisted at hotchkiss), I just found out today that I got into Milton! How does milton match up to the rest of these schools? did anyone else apply there?
also, im a bit confused.. the tuition for milton is almost 33 thousand, and i received a tuition grant of 28 thousand, plus a supplemental fee of 1200. It also says that the family contribution is 6 thousand. So, how much do my parents actually have to pay?? [help!]

indochick, waht a great catch in milton. fantastic!. it seems you may have answered your own question. it sounds like your family pays 6k per year. of course you'll have to account for books, travel back and forth home, and misc.

thanks prepparent! hopefully ill be able to do a bit of haggling over the next few weeks...!
btw, is hotckiss any better than milton? or is it the other way around? what do u ppl think?

IndoChick:Milton is right up there with the very best--academically it is a top drawer school. The only downside to Milton is that compared to Exeter/St. Paul's it has a larger contingent of day students and the social environment consequently slightly less supportive. That being said for the right person, academically competitive, culturally interested Milton would be in a class by itself. In your situation you got a fantastic deal at a great school. Go for it!!!

Indochick.......what you need to investigate: is there a workstudy opportunity to help you obtain spending $$......at Exeter there is and the hours are quite flexible......even $20./week is helpful to many students. Is this amount the same for your 4 years or does your contribution climb....ie grant now and lesser grant with a loan component in later years? The loan maybe school funded at a very low interest rate and payment schedule so not too scary. Travel + books is probably all that you are looking at. I know that many schools discount other opportunities for FA candidates.....ie extra social and trips.......these schools are by and large very generous to FA students. At Exeter things like Prom tickets, ski weekends, theatre tickets in Boston etc. were all available to students w/o spending funds. Congrats on a great offer and try not to worry too much.

indo chick you can't go wrong with either school. i think you'll get a better boarding exp. at hotchkiss. milton is i believe 40% boarding. good luck with the decision. you need to decide which schools mOOOOves you.

Milton Academy just built a new dorm. They know there is an issue with the day/boarding ratio and are making an effort to increase the number of boarders to 60% over the next couple of years.

I assume that Milton is trying to become more competative with other boarding schools. We were given the information about the decrease in day students last year from their admisssions people. We live nearby and my son was applying for 6th grade.

Milton did a strategic master plan a couple of years ago which basically was in response to the sentiment that they were a day school with boarding students vs. a boarding school with day students. There master plan called for the revitalization of the boarding program by gradually increasing to a majority of boarding students. I think two new dorms opened last September and I think there is a plan for two more. There are also restrictions on if you come in as a junior it has to be as a boarder and I think there is something around not being able to switch from a boarder to a day student. There were several other steps taken to improve the support structure for the boarding students.

My take on Milton is heavily influenced by the experiences of Gianscolere who even though extremely bright could not cope with the stress of not doing as well as he had hoped. I believe that the structure at St. Paul's would likely have provided more support at the time Gian was at his most vulnerable than Milton's was able to provide. Since indoChick is only 14 and 7000 miles away from home I would want to make darn sure that she has a faculty advisor to hold her hand when she needs it. As a parent I think Hotchkiss is a safer choice but since she does not have that available, I would want to settle the faculty advisor liaison up front if she decides to go to Milton. This is a lot more important than haggling about a few thousand dollars in FA.
