Hey guys! I’m a rising freshman at Milton Academy and I know how long and hard the application process is. If anyone has any questions about applying or about boarding school in general, feel free to ask me in the comments below!!
Hey rawrcats!
I applied to Milton this year (I was wailisted unfortunately. ) What really attracted me the most was its performing arts program. Do you have any experience or anything you want to chip in about that?
Hi mathman1201! I’m sorry to hear that, but remember that there is still a glimmer of hope in the waitlist I personally am plagued with stage fright (despite doing speech team) but I still tried out and participated in the fall musical this year, where I had one of the best times of my life. Milton’s performing arts program is (in my opinion) fantastic, because both classes and extracurriculars alike are given so much support by the community. Improv is always a popular course choice for senior year, and Dance Concert tickets for Friday often sell out on the very first day. I have found that it’s very easy for people new to performing to participate in any performing arts extracurricular or class, and the faculty associated with this department are absolutely amazing.
How to students balance elements of school life such as academics, extracurriculars and social life?
- How are the science programs at Milton?
- Are there opportunities for research during the school year?
- What are the current active math and science clubs?
Thanks in advance!!
How engaging are the teachers? Similarly, how do the teachers keep students engaged?
What is Milton’s biggest strength? It’s biggest weakness?
@pesceviolinist48 : Obviously each student is responsible for his or her own work ethic and schedule, but Milton’s schedule is designed so that a student has classes, thirty minutes for a club per day, and scheduled practice times for sports. In dorms, study hall is held for underclassmen. Of course, as with linear schedules such as this one, there is endless room for whatever the student chooses to do: for example, working with friends in the library is a popular after school activity. The student centre is a great hub for social interaction, which is often peppered with students working on homework during free periods and after school. Your own time management is up to you, but Milton gives plenty of opportunities to develop a well rounded routine.
@Snowfire88 :
- Science programs are known to be rigorous but fairly thorough. The hardest class at Milton is known to be Honours Biology, which is a very big time commitment for anyone interested. Most science classes will balance lab and class time pretty equally, with opportunities for field work.
- Research as in research with teachers or research in class? If the former, as far as I know, no. But Mr Bingham (one of the science teachers) led a research team in learning about climate change in Greenland, but I’m sorry to say that I don’t know too much about that. For the latter, Milton has a US History term paper (required to graduate) which allows the students to gather their own sources, take notecards, etc on any topic that they choose. Writing the term paper on his or her own topic made everyone an expert on one domain of US History and made for really interesting discussion!
- As far as I know, there’s Math Club and I’m nearly positive that there’s an Engineering Club. And probably a Science club as well. I’m so sorry I can’t help too much with this question, though I’m sure any administrator would be happy to answer if emailed!
@essaysarefun : I’ve known all teachers to be engaging in their own ways. Every teacher at Milton teaches here because they love the discussion that takes place, and though some might take a more laissez-faire approach to leading the class, I can assure you that every teacher will have their own methods of keeping the class lively. For example, maths teachers love group work, which allows everyone to learn from one another. Another English teacher might, for example, allow the class to decide what they want to discuss.
In my opinion, Milton’s strength is that it encourages critical thinking. Anything to do with learning is fair game, and I know that teachers love to discuss issues, class material, or debates with students even outside of class. I think Milton gives everyone the opportunity to thrive. As for its biggest weakness, I think there is a lot of pressure to be successful and the sad reality is that a lot of students are perpetually stressed by these expectations. Succeeding at Milton requires a lot of hard work and motivation, and though Milton is supportive, many students face the pressure of meeting every expectation. There are people who have found it too difficult and transferred to other schools. If you go to Milton, you can’t expect to win every battle and succeed immediately at everything, but you will learn from your experience, which in my opinion is even more valuable
what are the opportunities for students that would want to do some sort of community service on the weekends?
ps. I am an incoming freshman for the 2015-16 school year, and a boarder too!
Hi! I’m going to be applying for the freshman year and I was wondering if attending the receptions of each and every school is useful or not. Also, about what SSAT percentile score should I aim up to in order to get into one of top notch bs? Thanks!!
I think that it would be useful attending the receptions of the schools you would want to attend mos because you will be meeting some of the admission officers. As for the SSAT, just make sure you study and get a good score .
@gkim931 the average SSAT scores depends on each school so I would try to aim for the average or higher or close to the average
Hi everyone, I’m currently Milton Academy junior and I’ve been asked a fair number of questions about my lovely school so I decided to make a discussion about it. I’m a female boarder at Milton and I was a new sophomore. I hope I can be a resource to some of you in making your decisions or simply finding out more about the school. I was extremely overwhelmed when I got my acceptance letters so I know how hard (yet exciting!!) making a decision is. All I can say is that I fell in love with Milton and I’m so glad I picked to go here. If anyone else has any experience, corrections or questions, feel free to chip in!
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Any student/alum/parent/friend can respond to the questions.

@gkim931 you can go to boardingschoolreview.com to check the school that you are applying to and find out what is their average SSAT percentile to know what score you should aim for.
