Hey everyone,

I'm a German high school student entering my senior year next year and i'm thinking of applying to a few Ivy Schools (Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Upenn Wharton) and to Stanford for economics.

Now these are my stats:

Academic:
Abitur (German High School Leaving Certificate) 1.0 = GPA 4.0
SAT 2070 (Maths 740, Reading 660, Writing 670)
Subject Tests: Not yet taken
British GCSEs (spent a year abroad): 8 A*, 1 A, Further Maths taken
UK Maths Challenge Gold Certificate
Languages: German, English, Russian, Latin

Outside school:
Was elected Deputy Headboy of my school
Was voted on the schools board
On the board of our local branch of the Junge Union (a youth political party like YDA)
Won a prize in the nation wide Business@school competition
Have done 2 internships at banks thus far
Was selected to take a university course in finance parallel to my high school studies (I guess thats something like AP?)

Social: Did a social internship and worked 2 weeks full time for my community

Now is there actually any point in applying to schools this selective as an overseas applicant? Or will only highly intelligent geniuses without social lives getting in?

On that note just a few more questions:
- How good is social life at these schools?
- Is there any dating scene?
- Are there any parties?
- Is American beer really as bad as people say :D :D

Thanks a lot!!!

It is always worth applying if you can afford the cost. (though based on your last questions, I don’t know that you understand the goal of the Ivies…other schools may be better at the partying and dating)

Nearly every American college has a vibrant social life.
Foreign accents are always good for helpig dating…don’t see an issue there.
Count on parties if that is what you seek.
Yes, American beers are that bad. Fortunately we can get reasonable facsimilies of good beer imported.

Of course, you cannot drink in the US until you are 21 (legally anyway)

Hey, thanks for your answers- well those last questions were basically my way of asking: are only nerds attending these schools… Or is there any work hard play hard attitude? And is college a time that most people remember as the time of their lives or as a few dull years before work?

But now about the chances- is there any realistic chance of getting in?

And maybe one more questions: What do Americans in general think of Germans? Will the rest of the class be open and welcoming to foreign students?

Chances for Ivies are tough for anyone. By reputation, they would be work-hard/play-hard schools in general. I am sure there are some dedicated students who see the benefit of work hard now, play hard later.

About 15% of Americans claim German heritage (more than from any other country). Most people will not treat you badly simply because you are from another country. Maybe some jealous soccer fans who are still mad about the World Cup.
