Many of my extracurriculars are a mix between business/finance oriented ones, and economics related ones. I plan on applying to UPenn CAS as an econ major, because majoring in econ through CAS is actually what I would prefer to study compared to Wharton.

However, I have a feeling that admissions is going to feel that I am trying to manipulate the system by applying to CAS, and than internally transferring to Wharton. What should I do, to make sure that this does not happen, and to make sure that admissions knows I am genuinely interested in majoring in econ through CAS, moreso than econ through Wharton?

Answer this question and talk about econ: “The Admissions Committee would like to learn why you are a good fit for your undergraduate school choice (College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing, The Wharton School, or Penn Engineering). Please tell us about specific academic, service, and/or research opportunities at the University of Pennsylvania that resonate with your background, interests, and goals."

Hey Im in the same boat as you! Im an econ junkie haha. First focus on getting into Penn. I don’t doubt you,re brilliant, but I went to school with a kid who was first in his class, captain of 4 teams and a perfect score on his SATs and he didnt get in. Focus first on getting in.

When you apply, dont directly reference CAS or Wharton. Work on conveying your interest in economics and mention a few of the available programs that may be of interest to you. Focus on showing Penn why you are an asset to them and show them what you are capable of doing. Just my two cents, but dont worry about it. Focus on getting into penn and go with whatever sets you up the best for whatever career you hope to pursue.

If you are applying to CAS then I’d talk about why you want to mix your interest in economics with a true liberal arts education. And by the say, it is extremely difficult to transfer from CAS to Wharton – Penn is wise to that tactic.

Penn’s admission is unlikely to spend even a microsecond on considering that your likely declared major (e.g. Economics) is disingenuous. In fact at the CAS regardless of what you state as your likely major you are equivalent to someone who’s undecided. You have until the end of sophomore year to decide.

With Penn’s “one university” you’re likely to take courses at Wharton as an Econ major. For example statistics and accounting, courses they Econ majors may choose to take, are taught at Wharton.
