Econ department

Well, I am an international so please don’t mind if I ask stupid questions…

No chances thread though

Ok, so I like UPenn and I’d love to be a student and I desperately want to get into the ibanking etc. thus the logic conclusion would be to apply to Wharton.

However, from what I’ve heard (tell me if this is wrong) it is much harder to get accepted to Wharton than to the “regular” UPenn and I don’t have the 2400 SAT and 800 Math IIc SAT2.

Thus, I consider applying “regularly” and major in Economics. Does this hurt my career opportunities or is the normal economics dep as reputated as the university is and does it live up to its reputation ?

…

Good luck to all the EDers.

obv wharton is better connected but just applying to the College of Arts and Sciences would give you just as much of an amazing education. and anyway, all students at penn can take classes in any school so if you wanted better econ stuff, just sign up for classes at wharton. unless you want the name/belonging and want to try to get in to wharton in which case you should apply there and not CAS

yea my interviewer graduated from CAS with the economics degree and he's doing amazing right now... some consulting firm. He had so many opportunities to explore around the business field and he traveled a lot. Taking economics is still great - still can open a variety of doors.

I think for Wharton, the concentrations are so much more specific you really have to know exactly what you want.

i think CAS is a great choice if you are into econ. if you take some Wharton classes, and find you REALLY enjoy business, you could attempt at CAS >> Wharton transfer, provided you can maintain what, a 3.8 GPA? if you cant, don't think it'll hold you back in job opportunities, because i think employers will notice if you took a lot of business classes at Wharton, but just didn't get the diploma with Wharton's name on it :)

Econ at CAS and business at Wharton are very different. They are different things and you have to make sure one or the other interests you. You can get a business type job upon graduation with any degree (benefit of going to an Ivy) but it is easiest coming from Wharton. CAS is not Wharton or Harvard in the fact that you WILL position yourself for an amazing job after graduation, but you will be in a position to get a very good job after graduation.
