Applying to UVA as a Transfer

Hello,
There are some things on the UVA website that are unclear and I'm wondering if anyone knows the answers. UVA's website says that a person must have a 3.4 gpa from the vccs coursework and then it says that a student must recieve a grade C or better in any course. If You're making all C's except for your english courses which has to be a B you're gpa is not going to be 3.4.
I have a 3.2 college gpa with 43 credits. I'm graduating from a vccs institution in May 2010 and will have just over 60 credits. I also work fulltime as a Pharmacy Technician at a local hospital. I want to apply to UVA for the fall 2010. Is a 3.2 acceptable if I have good recommedations from a professor or two at my current institution and write a killer essay or will I have to work a little harder ( is that possible?..lol) to bring my gpa up a little before the Spring 2010 when applications are due? I'm interested in the BA/MA English major program at UVA and have already decided that I will not be working while I'm working toward the bachelors/masters. I'm going to take creative writing 1 and advanced composition before I leave TCC.
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated

I don’t think it would hurt to bring your GPA up to a 3.4 if that is necessary under the articulation agreement.

I’m a vccs student who is intending to apply under the GAA in Fall 2010 as well. As far as the C’s, I think they may mean like a ‘random C’ somewhere on your transcript other than the Eng. Comp courses. Do you have a transfer counselor at your campus at TCC? Consulting with them may be very helpful. I think it’s great to research an issue as much as possible & speak with other students, but when it comes to serious admission questions such as yours it’s best to speak with an admissions officer or a transfer counselor. Also, as far as your plans (I want to do a MA in English, too:) check out the GAA referencing vccs courses - it says “Although VCCS courses may be used to fulfill competency, area, & elective req’s, they typically will not satisfy major req’s”…I’m not totally sure what this means re: your creative writing & adv. comp., but just something to be aware of. Plus, I’m sure you can raise that gpa & then be totally in the clear for the GAA.

Good luck:)

I got an A and B in the two English composition courses we are required to take and I only have 3 courses left that are “have to take”…1 science w/ lab, health, and a math course. Everything else is electives for me. There is a counselor I’m planning to speak with before the fall semester starts, but sometimes the vccs counselors can be only mildly helpful. The last one I saw handed me a slip of paper with a list of courses and said choose from these courses. He didn’t even ask me about my future plans. I felt like I was a number, even more so because I suppose I’m classified as an “adult learner”. Im 24 yrs old and a returning student after a 4 year interruption. Does anyone how how UVA favors adult learners?
Thanks for your replies.

Pinknebula is right - you have to have a 3.4 GPA, but the lowest grade for any particular class has to be at least a C. So in other words, you have to get some A’s to counteract the C, if you got one. You’ll need to bring up your GPA to a 3.4 in order to be guaranteed admission.
