I heard this wasn't a good idea especially if you want to transfer into an impacted major. For me I want to get into comp sci but the admission rates and statistics are depressing. Would applying undecided be a good idea? Other thoughts are appreciated.

If you want to do Computer Science (CS), apply to Electrical Engineering (EE). Compsci had ~9% acceptance rate this year, EE was between 20 and 30. After getting into EE, you can focus on Computer Engineering (CE) within EE, which requires taking CS 31,32,33, Math 31ab,32ab,33ab, chem 20a, eng comp 3, and physics 1abc as an underclassman (those are btw, the EXACT same classes that CS/CSE majors have to take as underclassmen). If you do well in these classes, you can easily switch to CS major since you’re already in HSSEAS (that’s really important–transferring from Letters and Sciences is MUCH harder, especially for CS). If you do poorly in those classes, then 1) you probably weren’t cut out for CS anyway and 2) you can still get good money from CE, for which you’re on track to finish anyway. Anyway, just my 2 cents…

Thanks man! Would you happen to know the admit rate for applying undeclared to engineering and applied science?

Undeclared engineering was 12.9% last year. The only one I know for 2014 is CS because I went to the CS open house, but the link shows you the 2013 (and prior) acceptance rates.

I heard that next year EE is getting rid of the options (i.e. Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering)

;-; I hope you’re wrong…

Assuming that you can’t do CE and have to be an EE major, you still follow the same curriculum as a CS major for the first 2 quarters, so it really doesn’t matter in the slightest IF you manage to do well in CS 31 and CS 32.

Would I be able to transfer after those 2 quarters or freshman year?

I’m currently a high school senior who’s majoring in CSE at UCLA next year, and all the information I can give is based off what I know from the engineering open house and talking to people I know who do CSE at UCLA.

That being said, the main things you need to switch from EE to CS are good grades in CS 31 and CS 32 (and possibly CS 33), but it really depends on a case by case basis that you’ll need to discuss with your counselor. At the open house, they emphasized that switching majors within HSSEAS is largely based on performance in the major classes (if you do well in the classes, you’re pretty much guaranteed to transfer), so I would assume that if you get reasonably good grades in CS 31 and 32, you would be able to transfer after 2 quarters without much hassle. Don’t quote me on it because I’m not entirely sure at the moment, but my qualified answer to your question would be yes.

Changing majors in HSSEAS (you can be considered for changing majors after 2 quarters as a freshman):
