Appointment for Class of 2017

I'd like to start off by saying that this is my first post ever, however, I have read posts on here for months and gained great insight from them. With that, I would like to say that yesterday I received my appointment into the class of 2017 at the Naval Academy!

I would like to give prospective candidates a good background of myself for comparisons sake. I know I would always look at peoples posts asking whether they would be competitive or not, but who really knows until you get in, right? So, with that being said, I would like to give my credentials for others to compare to their own credentials.

Here it goes:
I am currently a senior at a private, Catholic high school 15 minutes outside of Buffalo, NY. I am the first person to go into the military from my family. I am a white male (unusual, right?). I got my application done at the end of November and had to clear up something I said in my personal statement with Character Review Committee. When talking about integrity, I had said I had lied to my parents one night as to my where abouts and they asked for more details. I honestly thought this might ruin my application, but it may have helped when I think back on it. I received my nomination from Congressman Brian Higgins, who at the time represented NY-27. His letter with the congrats said the nominations were "very" competitive. I don't know how true that is, but assume all ten slots were filled. With that, I will list my "credentials":

-Attended Naval Academy Summer Seminar
-Attended a Candidate Visit Weekend in February 2013
-Attended New York Boys State
-Received a letter of recommendation from a retired Vice Admiral who is a family friend
-Around 97 or 4.0 weighted average for first 7 semesters of high school
-Played Varsity soccer for 3 years. Was a two year captain. Won MVP two years.
-Played Varsity Hockey for 3 years. Was a two year captain. Won all conference awards two years and sportsmanship award once
-Did varsity track for three years, not captain and no awards
-Took a total of 6 AP classes: World History, US History, Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, and Literature
-SAT math: 680
-SAT reading: 640
-SAT two part cumulative: 1320
-ACT: 29
-Editor of school Yearbook senior year
-Member of a sailing club
-NHS member
-Church group member
-Soccer referee (less than 10 hours per week)
-Member of various clubs at school

I have no doubt I left some things out on accident. If you have any questions at all, please let me know. I'd love to help and talk with others, I know talking to someone who had been through the entire process always helped me. Again, please don't hesitate to ask me anything you might have a question on, candidate or parent, and I will answer to the best of my ability. I have until June 27th, also know as I-day (can't wait already). GO NAVY!! BEAT ARMY!!

So I’m taking it you’re accepting your appointment? ;)

Congratulations, that is excellent!

What was your reaction when you found out you were appointed?

I could not have checked the yes line any quicker. Looking forward to my time in Annapolis! As for my reaction, when I saw the large envelope with “department of the navy” on it, I knew. So I ran in my house from the mailbox and called anyone who would listen to me. I couldn’t stop pacing around my house out of sheer excitement. It has to be one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced!

What were your math and English ACT scores?

Congrats! You are the prototypical “average” white guy! And I mean that with all due kudos and respect!

Your appointment is the consequences of your extraordinary hard work, good performance, and great choices to this point in your early life. Thanks for sharing, and here’s hoping that many young men and women who are in middle school are reading this, catching the vision, and getting on the path you’re on. You’ll never regret it, altho there will be days when you’ll wonder “What the bleep am I doing here.” I guarantee the day you throw you cover into the hot, humid sky laying over Memorial Stadium, you will not be asking that question.

Go get 'em. And practice both your runs, push-ups, and affirmation of “GO NAVY! BEAT … !”

btw, your profile is not “unusual”, simply notably competitive, meritorious, and outstanding! Great job! Stay the course!

teach4- If I remember correctly, my ACT math was a 28 and my ACT english was a 27. In my opinion, the academy disregarded those scores and just used my SAT scores to do what they do. My SAT scores were much higher, hence this opinion.

Whistle Pig- Thank you for the reply. I hope that my example sheds light to others that if you are white and male, there is still hope! It was definitely not an easy process, but one I would do in a heartbeat again to get this feeling. I cannot wait to get to the Academy on June 27th for I-day!
