Approaching Stanford

I got my forms today and I'm really excited!

So, anyone wanna talk about...picking IHums? Or dorms (all-frosh v. four-class, coed by floor v. by room, theme housing, SLE, FroSoCo)? Or just general Approaching Stanford...stuff?

I hope that mine comes on Monday.

Does anyone think it's a nuisance that we can't meet our roommate until we get there? I would have liked to coordinate what to bring before actually driving up there.

yeah, i would like to coordinate, but now that i'm thinking about it, i like that we won't know. that way, no one goes up there thinking "i'm going to hate my roommate" before you even meet. also, some roommates could be really close going in, while others spoke once or twice, and then the dorm isn't on an even footing.

logistically its more difficult, but I think socially its better...

I definitely want to be in an all-frosh dorm! Does any one know of a person not getting what they wanted in terms of dorms? (not like, absolutely what they wanted, but 4 class/all frosh type of thing...)

Yeah, I kinda like not knowing too. I had a roommate for a summer program, and I think that if I'd been able to contact her without actually meeting her beforehand, we would've gotten off to a rougher start (she was absolutely NOTHING like me, and the things I like about her aren't well-expressed on paper), but we got along incredibly well anyway. It will be kinda frustrating to not be able to coordinate ("I'll bring the fridge," etc.), but I guess being able to meet our roommates in the context of our rooms'll give us a better idea of what we want to bring anyway.

I used to really want an all-frosh dorm, but I talked to some kids who'd had them and hated 'em during Admit Weekend. They said that those dorms were full of school spirit, only nobody really knew anything about the school, that they tended to be rowdier and more prone to the stupid variety of partying (vomit on the floor, etc.). Didn't sound all that great to me, so I'm gonna put all the four-class options above the all-frosh (SLE comes first though). And yeah, I've heard that all-frosh dorms fill up fast 'cause lots of kids request them, but I don't have any specifics so maybe it's just...hearsay?

I'm torn between four-class and all-frosh - all-frosh would be amazingly fun and because we're all in the same boat together, it'd probably be easier to get used to life in the dorms; most of us aren't used to sharing a bathroom with so many other people, first time we've truly left home, you know? So being surrounded by so many other people in the same situation will be comforting. Whereas with a four-class dorm, we'd have the upperclassmen around to give us valuable advice. Also, it'd be easier to study in four-class dorms because they tend to be quieter. I haven't received my forms yet anyway so I'll just wait and see.

If you go to a four-class dorm in your freshman year, then do you have to stay there for the sophomore year and further years?

If you are allowed to move into another dorm, do the people who stayed in the all-frosh dorms get preference since they have to move whilst you don't?

I think every year there's a new housing lottery, and I don't think you get preference based on where you live (unless you do FroSoCo).

OK, question -- does anyone have an opinion on coed by hall? I don't care AT ALL, but I have to indicate one way or the other on the form. Are there any arguments for either, or anything I should take into account?

i chose all freshman, coed by floors

actually i don't know what any of the dorms are gonna be like...I didn't get to go to Admit Weekend, and last summer at Discover Stanford, the dorms were locked so I didn't get to see any of the halls or rooms =/
