I have an interview coming up and have selected an outfit of which I'm uncertain about. The top is a royal red, sleeveless chiffon blouse and a jet black pencil skirt. Are pencil skirts appropriate? How tight is too tight? How loose should they be? To what length should it go to?

Any other outfit suggestions are welcome! I live in a hot and humid state so I'd prefer not to wear pants or long sleeves shirts.

Just ask yourself: would I wear this to grandma’s house? If the answer is yes, you are absolutely fine and you should not worry at all.

In my opinion: No shorter than 2 inches above the knee in length - but keep in mind how short it is when you sit down. It can get too short when sitting if its not a stretchy material. Not so tight that you can clearly see muscles/dimples or underwear lines. Sleeveless is okay as long as it isn’t spaghetti straps or otherwise revealing a large amount of shoulder (so about 3 inches wide, perhaps). Otherwise it sounds fine.

Also consider the context/company/position; is a jacket appropriate? How dressed up are the employees who work there everyday? A general rule of thumb is to look a little nicer than the typical day-to-day attire would be working in the position. If it’s hot, take a jacket with to put on once you’ve entered the building (hopefully there’s air conditioning). They make 3/4 sleeve, and you can get ones made of thinner material. I think a skirt is fine if it is a conservative length and you don’t want to wear pants. And if they don’t have a fancy dress code or expectation, forget the jacket and the top should be fine.

Thank you, Nova. Your response was just what I was looking for!

I might have to end up getting a new pencil skirt. I have jotted down your advice to take with me.

I would recommend a jacket over your sleeveless top. It will make you look more polished and professional. You can carry it in the building if it is too hot as another poster recommended. Or if you don’t want to wear a jacket get a blouse with a short sleeve, but I would go for the jacket myself personally.

Will do, momtotwins! Luckily, I have a black blazer.

Inquiries- is the red chiffon blouse gauzy ?? Would your bra show through? If so, maybe wear a camisole under the blouse.
