Who is going? I will be there with my D.

We’re coming down sometime in the next week or so. We were going to visit next Tuesday just to take a tour, but then the admitted students day invitation came, so we’re not sure.

If you have a choice, go to Decision Day (if that’s what they still call it) The info is more relevant than on a regular tour.

We’re taking our S on the 10th. Very excited about going but wondering if the crowds will be huge. Does anyone know if parking is a problem?

Last year parking was available in the main garage near Trabant. If I remember correctly, they send the details once you register for the day.

the parking (not a problem at all)is well set up for accepted students day, you will get a pass well marked out with students showing where to go. If the weather is nice it will sell the school the atmosphere is quite infectious. Tour main street as well, almost makes you wish it were u going instead. For us blinding snow in Binghamton on accepted students day the week before, versus sunny and 75 outdoor cafe’s and live bands. What’s not to like?

They should also be providing free lunch (they did last year, as opposed to UMCP who did not) and UD ice cream (which I think is way overhyped, they don’t really make it themselves, it’s just made from milk from their cows, and it doesn’t even come close to Cornell or UConn ice cream in terms of quality or flavors).

On a related topic, they’re having ground breaking for a UD Creamery on AG Day on the 24th, so maybe the ice cream will be better once they are making it themselves.

Well, that’s a great reason for choosing the school - excellent ice cream! Hoping we have great weather that day!

We are bringing my son on the 10th, but have not received any additional info except the online confirmation. Has anyone received anything else?

I hope the weather cooperates. My husband and I are alum and have many fond memories of laying on the mall.

See everyone on the 10th

We just have the confirmation email. We are going down a day early so that D can sit in on a class (arranged that through the website, one of the depts she contacted wrote right back and set it up) and I can go to FA. Emailed Hillel and may also go there on Friday night.

Looks like April 9 will be rainy but April 10 looks ok…

I’m looking forward to this trip with D as her time at home dwindles (she leaves for her summer job at a sleepaway camp on June 14… so we are really getting down to the wire!).

LINYMOM, you just wrote directly to the department and said she was coming down and they made the arrangements?

LINYMOM, your D should also consider doing Freshman Fest (through the Hillel). There are threads here from last year about it. It’s a great way to ease in at the beginning of the fall semester.

LINYMOM, we are doing three admitted students days this coming week–Syracuse on Monday, Maryland on Friday and Delaware on Saturday. We will arrive in Newark Friday (not sure of time) but don’t know if my son will want to see Hillel. What type of activity are they doing? Did you pre-register?

Has your daughter chosen UD already? My son is still up in the air between Delaware and Syracuse mostly.

I think we will all be happy when he has made his decision.

I was cruising through the UDel website – I think I found the list of departments through the VISITING page. It gave a whole list of departments and who to contact if you want to sit in on a class (tel number and email). She sent an email and told them when she was coming and why she was interested. She got a response later that day or the next. She’s going to sit in on an intro to anthro/arch class with a prof on Friday afternoon.

handemom: That was my other question to Hillel - about Freshman Fest. Found out that it starts on Thurs, Aug 26, with move in at 5 pm, program to start at 7 pm and it lasts throughout Shabbat on Friday night. They will have more info in the next couple of months, but being the obsessive CC mom, the more info I have the sooner, the better. Plus, D is working at a camp (URJ) this summer so she needs to put in requests for days off for orientation, etc. I don’t know why I need to know now how absolutely insane that week will be.

udpt82ny: Hillel just has their regular dinner and service (you can check all their activities on the UD Hillel website). The program director said I could go with her; no charge, just a donation (which I will make). She is all set on UD (but I’m not giving deposit until after we go again). She was deferred at UMD, so that made it an easy decision (I wanted her to apply to Syracuse but she refused!). Other schools she got in and would consider are American and UConn, but Delaware is really her preference over these. Oh - and we should get to UD by 11:30 am on Fri. The class she is attending is at 12:20.

Finally - the reason why we will go to Hillel is because this is an easy fit for her when going somewhere new. When we visited University of Hartford it was a Sunday and there were no tours scheduled. I just contacted Hillel prior to arriving and two freshmen girls gave us a tour. Because of my D’s various URJ activities (NFTY, etc.) they knew a lot of the same people; they invited D to come back and stay with them for an overnight, and they were FB friends before we even got out of the state of CT.

LINYMOM, my son’s ‘runner up’ school was UConn. He went with UDel, primarily because he liked the idea that it wasn’t so isolated.

Handemom, my son has narrowed it down to UD, Syracuse, UMD and UConn, but I think the first two are being seriously considered.

Actually my son also was accepted to Syracuse (didn’t apply to UMD). He said he didn’t want to deal with the rough winters (cold/snow) if he didn’t have to. Meanwhile he had 3 snow-days in the first week of the Spring semester at Udel!

In 1979, when I was at UD, the university shut down completely because of snow. Rumor had it that it was the first time such a closing took place. Times have changed.

I also heard that Syracuse had a very mild winter this year. It’s impossible to figure the weather anymore!

This is S’s exact situation. We went to visit UConn for the first time this week, and while it had some appealing aspects, namely the big-time sports, S felt much more at home when visiting Delaware, and thought the kids seemed happier. (It also helps that it’s much less of a shlep for us to get there. :)) When he found out about his acceptance, he happened to be wearing the UD shirt he bought when we visited last spring. It was meant to be!
