***April 2016 ACT Discussion Thread***

I just registered. This will be my third time – first and second being October and February respectively. Both tests had ridiculously easy science sections with brutal curves, so I’m hoping for a less harsh curve this time around lol.

I only have a 27 in math, but I’m tutoring another student to get to a 22. I’m hoping my tutoring and making sure I know how to do every single math problem in the sections we do will help me really up that section.

I would love a 31C with 35E, 30M, 30R, and 27S. :slight_smile:

Taken it twice and gone from a 31 to a 32, taking it once in April for the state and again the following Saturday. Hopefully one of those will finish it for me. I have pretty high hopes because my math score, which I expected to be almost perfect last time, ended up being a 29 lol. Good lucky guys, keep practicing and just go an get this thing done.

First time taking and hoping for a 34+. What practice tests are good? I have the Real ACT Prep Guide (red book) but I’m looking for more.

■■■■■■■■.com has lots of practice tests.

Was going to take the ACT in June but some kid in my class got a perfect score so now I have to take it in April to catch up :smiley:

What prep books did majority of you use to study from to obtain a composite of 28+? Suggestions and test taking tips will be appreciated, thanks!

@Pisaller I used the 2016 Princeton Review book and regret using it. The best to use (imo) is the red book and any other released tests.

@jwn9917 What do you hate about it specifically?

Same, I’m curious to know as well since I was considering it.

The ACT scores are going to be posted 10 days after the test. 1/2 the wait from the SAT. :smiley:

@Pisaller and @EF431x - I regret using Princeton because their test content is not made consistently with how ACT makes their tests. The content just feels different. My subscores were really screwy, too. I struggled to hit 30 on their English tests, but hitting 30 on math was a breeze. On the February ACT, I made a 33 English and 27 Math. Those scores align better with real ACT practice tests I took, too. When I took real ACT tests from the red book and other recently released tests (2013-present) from CrackACT, I scored between 29.25-30.0 almost consistently. I took a break over Christmas/New Years then started working in my Princeton book, and I scored between 27.5-28.25 every time. My composite from February was 28 (27.5), which disappointed me after my 29s and 30s before Christmas.

This could be completely irrelevant/not related, but before Christmas on real ACT tests, I was pumping out 31-33 on almost every reading test. Ever since, I’ve struggled to make 28+ on reading practice tests (from Princeton and additional actual ACT tests). That is really hurting my score by at least one composite point. Has anyone ever hit a similar “slump,” and do they know how to get out of it?

How do you guys view the Barron’s ACT Prep Book. Not the ACT 36 but the general book. Harder or easier than the actual test?

@bsdsj22 I am on the same boat.

@concreteolives Not necessarily, ACT scores do not come out at once.

@buffalo11 Never used the ACT book, but from my experience of using its AP and SAT books, it is generally more difficult.

All I need is a little motivation to get me studying hard for April

Got a 32 on the February ACT (34 E, 35 M, 33 R, 26 S lol @ the science). I recently got back my January SAT scores, which I actually took in February too because of Snow delays, and I got a 2270 (720 CR, 770 M, 780 W (11 essay)).

So, I’m not really too stressed for this one anymore. Just going to do some science practice and hope for the best really - the key to doing well on these tests is to walk in absolutely relaxed and to not think so much about the result as much as the actual test you’re taking. Then, you’re golden.

Does ACT writing even matter anymore? I didn’t sign up for the writing since my top schools Cornell and Upenn don’t require them.

@concreteolives

I signed up for it. Even though the ivies don’t require it, it’s better to include it since every other top student does.

I scored a 35 on the science section today :smiley: just need to improve reading.

@bsdsj22
Okay thanks I just switched to ACT with writing. By the way awesome job on the science section. I need to consistently hit 33-35 in science. My goal is 34 C.
