So I found that there was something from April 25th to 27th at Harvard University. What do we do there, and is it worthwhile (that is, for someone who lives in CA and can't really afford to pay too much)? Any thoughts, comments, etc? Thanks!

bbbbumpppp…

I’m curious too!

Also, is this Prefrosh weekend?

Yep, that’s prefrosh weekend. If you’ve already made up your mind about coming to Harvard and you’re from somewhere really far away, it might not be worth coming, but prefrosh was definitely the time that helped me decide on Harvard. College visits/tours/info sessions for a few hours with your parents are well and good and everything, but spending full days at schools and socializing with the people who go to them and really seeing what it will be like to live there for four years are all crucial to choosing where to attend.

Yep, that’s the Prefrosh Weekend! From what I’ve heard, if you’re already sold on Harvard it’s not really worth going–it’s not a representative weekend/experience. However, if you’re trying to decide between H and other schools, then it’s a good way to learn more about what the College offers. There’s a program schedule on the admitted students’ website.

In many cases, depending on your financial need, Harvard will pay for your travel costs. If you’re eligible for a travel subsidy, you will receive an email from the FinAid office soon.

See you there–maybe!

@kayabertz - My opinion is a bit different from yours…

If you’ve already decided you’re coming to Harvard (and you can afford the time/money to come) you absolutely should come and visit! It’s a great chance to meet your future classmates, have a ton of fun, get to know the school, find out about activities you want to do, and just in general get excited about next year.

If you’re still undecided and looking for a visit that is very representative of “normal” Harvard - it might be better to visit on a weekend other than prefrosh. On the other hand, prefrosh weekend can also be a great time to evaluate Harvard, because there are events set up to answer your questions, you get to meet your peers (a huge part in my decision), and there’s a lot of structure to help you navigate the campus (i.e. a list of a good classes to visit).

Basically, if you can swing attending prefrosh weekend, I recommend it highly!

If people could put in a little more input here it would be greatly appreciated. I have a huge scheduling conflict, so I’m wondering if I should try and work it out anyway and go (if it’s really worth it) or just meet people at some other point. Also, I am one of those “definitely attending Harvard” students so…

Do we get t-shirts?

^ oh that would be sweet! haha. I heard that parents get t-shirts, but I don’t know about the students.

yeah, you’ll get a Harvard 2013 shirt (if they continue the tradition). last year i arrived at prefrosh weekend late, so all they had left were larges and x-larges…

Tennisgirl - what was “late”

On the info, Saturday starts with lunch and then the “address” is about 3:00, etc. During that whole rest of the daytime, what does the student do? Is it worth coming at the earlier end of things?

I second smoda’s question. I want the t-shirt hehe What time are you guys coming on Saturday? I’m thinking near the beginning of the President’s address?

If you know you’re attending and you have a massive scheduling conflict, then you can definitely skip prefrosh. It’s a fun weekend, but you’ll have all of freshman orientation week to meet your class (you can also do a preorientation program like FOP or FUP to meet more people). Plus you’ll get to enjoy four prefrosh weekends as a student, so you’re not missing out entirely.

@smoda et al - Saturday mornings (before noon at least) tend to be pretty dead around campus, because people go out until late on Friday. It might be nice to get in an hour or two before Faust’s talk just to orient yourself on campus.

As of right now, the T-shirt sounds more tempting than the pre-frosh weekend :)

Saturday night will be a lot of fun. I’m very upset that I’ll be out of town that weekend!

D and I went to the Boston Harvard club reception yesterday. I spoke with admissions about that weekend. She stated that the earliest of scheduled things is at 11:00 am. Something to do with campus computers. It is something one can either choose to attend or not. It continues from there. But I think that formally, the prefrosh weekend begins mostly with the 3:00 address.

Due to her own reasons, D will not be staying for Monday. With that in mind, I am going to encourage her to arrive as early as she is comfortable on Saturday.
