I’m on a 4 x 4 block schedule (each semester 4 classes, in total 8 for the year). Looking to major in business, and so far I haven’t shown any classes in that so that’s what some of the AP classes are for this year. So far, I’ve taken:
AP English Language and Composition
H. German [study hall]
AP Microeconomics
H. Algebra II
I was wondering if taking 3 this semester is doable, especially with quality like getting 4’s and 5’s on the AP exams.
AP Statistics
AP United States History
AP Environmental Science
H. German [study hall]
btw I haven’t taken the SAT yet or studied for it… I did get around a ~1150 on the PSAT though that I took in October.
I could potentially replace APES with H. Human Anatomy. I mean I’m fine with science, I could probably get an A in APES but that’s not the point. Is doing the schedule above too much?
what do you mean by this semester, stats and apush aren’t typically semester long classes. Are you a sophomore and you’re asking about those courses for a jr as your thread implies? Anyway don’t take stats before calculus.
The OP already stated that the HS is on a block schedule. So most “typical” year-long courses are covered in one semester.
Nothing wrong with that, but personally, I’d suggest knocking precalc out of the way first.
Well I got a B in H. Algebra II (only B so far in high school). I know AP Stats is 1.) Relevant to me b/c it’s business and I need to start displaying some classes relevant to my major 2.) It’s easier for me to get a A in AP Stats then in H. Pre-Calc 3.) I’m going to do H. Pre-calc fall of senior year and AP Calc AB spring of senior year anyway
BTW should I do the schedule with APES or with H. Anatomy???
I think you should replace APES with a regular/honors Biology/Chemistry/Physics (if you have not taken).
Since you will take Precall/CalAB next year, you don’t need to take AP Stats. You will have enough math classes. AP Stats is easier than AP Calculus but don’t assume that it’s easy for you. It still requires strong math concepts and busy work.
Also AP Stats is relevant to business but it’s not a must to have class to apply to college. Calculus is a part of some business programs.
I have taken biology and chemistry. Physics is for next year. Same with Pre-calc and AP Calc. Its either do APES and AP Stats or do H. Human Anatomy and AP Stats and get more time to study for the SAT and other AP classes @coolweather. By the way, for us, junior year is a choice science year. We pick which science we want. APES would be the highest available.
Take Pre-calc now if it’s possible. Pre-calc will review some Algebra II. It may help to prepare for SAT Math 2. It also reduces risk in taking Pre-cal/Cal AB next year (what if you don’t do well in Pre-cal next Fall? It will be a busy semester with college application work).
Also think about who are going to write recommendation letters next year if you plan to apply to private colleges. Ideally they should be from the 11th grade teachers.
“It’s easier for me to get a A in AP Stats then in H. Pre-Calc 3.”
So adcoms know this too, and in some schools, depending on the what the GC says, precalc honors can be tougher than Calculus. If you’re doing this for yourself wrt business then stats may be ok, but if you’re doing this for admissions, they do not consider stats or ES rigorous APs, so you’re better off with H Anatomy as well.
If you can’t take precalculus take AP stats.
But precalculus would be better.
Schedule a sat and an act between March and may and prep for it- consider it an extra class you have HW for every day.
I’d suggest APES, it’s not super difficult as far as science goes.
What are you going to take each block next year?
Next year, going to take…
First semester
-Honors Pre-Calc
-AP Physics 1
-AP US Government
-Engineering Applications (Study hall)
Second semester
-AP Calculus (either AB or BC)
-AP English Literature
-(Possibly try to do another AP science class to get the 2 laboratory science class mandate for college knocked out)
-AP Macroeconomics (would only be available as an online class at my school, but hey… I’d consider it a partial study hall)
By the way, I have not gotten a B yet and have shown a steady trend in grades, each year increasing in difficulty. With my past rigor, this schedule will look achievable.
Your second semester workload is too much. You’ll be done with high school - you won’t want to slog through AP classes and AP exams. You’ll heckle your junior self for hubris.
My suggestion: Replace AP English Lit with Honors English, take Calc AB (it’ll already be super ambitiousin just a semester, math requires time to be processed right), AP Macro, and an honors science like non-AP CS or Engineering Applications.
