AP's... Worth it?

I've been trying to figure out the deal with AP's. I see how taking an AP class demonstrates drive, but I was wondering what the purpose was of self-studying for AP exams in terms of college admissions. Does one even report those scores? Do they help? I'm studying for the World History SAT subject test, and will take it next weekend, so then should I also try and take the World History AP since they're relatively similar, or is there no point in doing that because college admissions will see how you performed on the SAT? Thanks so much, I've been a little lost on all this.

Same thing, self-studying demonstrates drive, initiative, discipline and a love of learning. And yes, you do report these scores for admissions (and they’re on your score report).

They’re only offered once a year though, so if you were to take the AP World History exam you would have to take it next May. Will you still remember the material then?

Thanks so much for responding! Right, that’s the thing. It would be a whole year earlier, but I could just study again. I’m just trying to figure out if there’s any point. Is there any point in having both, when they essentially test the same thing?

It depends on the college, but I’d be shocked if you found a college giving credit for even a 800 on a SAT II. If the college gives credit for the ap test, take it. If you are applying to any reach schools, take it. It would be hard to contrive a scenario where the $86 wouldn’t be a great investment.
