Does anybody else have a problem with this class? A lot of people say this class isn't that hard, but for me, it seems like one of the hardest class I've ever taken in highschool so far! Anytime I read "American Peagant" I wonder why in the world this book was written as a "textbook" -which actually made in the way readers would learn something out of it. I mean, this book is not THAT bad, but still not the best (at least for me). Multiple Choise tests we do in the class seems TOO detailed that the questions came from the middle of nowhere in the paragraph.

And the workload is really huge in this class to, imo. If I try to sit down and read the book carefully, it would take forever! How do you read the textbook carefully and also quickly at same time? Maybe this is a matter of reading skill?

Anyway, if you're having (had) some problems with this class, share your story! And if you successively survived this class, please be so kind and tell this poor dude how? I love you guys all!

the best thing about testing with Bailey is that his tests are much harder than the AP test.

the only reason why Bailey's tests are so hard is because they quote exact phrases from his book. to ace the tests, you need to know content to the T - some of the questions on the test are just re-phrased sentences from the textbook, i'm sure you've noticed that.

definitely try reading and underlining in pencil important things in each paragraph before you take notes. that way when you take notes, you don't waste time sifting through his jargon and just going straight for the important things. names, dates, events, bills, propositions, deaths - basically everything that's not either describing a person (like how Washington was 6'4" - that's useless) or an opinionated rant. try your best to translate all his metaphors into something nice and concrete. he's an entertaining writer.

use cliff savers or whatever that thing is called. notes or something.

I have the American peagant book also. It wasn't that hard until we got to the Madison, Hamilton, Jefferson part. The constitution is way more than i can memorize.

I used this: http://www.apnotes.net/

It helped a lot when I just didn't feel like reading the entire chapter.

I ended up getting a 4 on the exam.

prolixity: Yeah, I took my 2nd test (which I did HORRIBLE), and that's kinda what I've noticed too! But it's good to know those tests are actually harder than the actual AP exam. And thanks for good note taking tips!

Mackie45: haha, I think I'm in that unit right now... constitution unit, right? lol, sounds like next few weeks are going to be my lucky week.

well idk but i loved the textbook and like could memorize a whole lot of detail without attempting to. But my friends they made notecards and stuff. Go use coursenotes site. it's helpful. I got a five if that means anything.

I took APUSH last year and loved it. My textbook was good. We switched between American Pageant and the American Nation? or something like that. My teacher was good though. just read alot and take alot of notes from the text book. Im in euro now and American is so much more cut and dry than all those Hapsburgs and what not. Yeah, just take notes. i love notes.

Yeah, I don't have a huge problem with American Peagant, although I think this book can be little nicer than it is now (i.e. boldface the glossary words, etc.). I think I need to start reading the book more closely. I'm like a total science/math person, so I have no problem memorizing AP Bio stuffs, but when it comes to history... I don't know, I feel it's quite different. Anyway, I guess I just need to get used to it.

American Pageant is a truly awesome book...I can not tell you how much I love it. We used it last year in APUSH and I read every chapter. The Bailey tests are definitely challenging, but when you get to the AP test you are more than prepared. My teacher always told us to "read the question, read the question, read the question!" before answering, so that by reading over it a few times you picked up on exactly what they were asking (some can be tricky in the wording). I ended up with a 5.

Yea, I am also more of a math/science person and took AP USH last year and had to read almost all of the American Pageant. It is not the most exciting book to read, but what I suggest is that you get a book that really helps, but I can't remember the title now...I think the company that makes it starts with an A, you can't get it in a book store so you have to order it online but it REALLY helps. If you go on the SAT/AP board you will be able to find it because i have seen so many people recommend it.....argh what is it called! can anyone remember? well anyway so i used that to help me review for the test and I got a 5.
