does anyone know what the best books for united states history ap are? barrons? cliffs? princeton? rea? any suggestions? my textbook is too long and boring and i plan on just reading review books instead of my textbook and i need some good books but also some books that have just what you need to know for the ap exam, nothing more, nothing less.

I am using the American Pagent. It is a decent book.

amsco. it owns
other than that, i think sparknotes is pretty good

The REA book for APUSH is really good. I suggest that.

Ummm... I'm not too sure, I studied from some random book with an American Flag on the cover. However, I'm sure Barron's, Princeton Review, and Sparknotes are all really good.

theres this amazing book called Unted States History spreparing for the advanced placement examination. its by newman/schmalbach. its the amsco one. its seriously the best one around

the textbook for apush at my school is the amsco test prep book. it`s really good.

I'd say rea's amazing. All I did to prep for the test was read rea once through and it had enough info to get me through the MC/FR easily. I ended up with a 5 and would really recommend it.

EDIT: it is, however, very long. If you're looking for something short that sums everything up very well, use Princeton's. It all depends on how confident you feel right now. Do you think you know the material? Then you'd be fine with Princeton's. If you think you need more background info, I recommend rea.

I prepped with Sparknotes, the test was based on LOTS of memorization. I'm happy with a 800 SATII~

REA for sure.

What state do you go to school in? (im just wondering because my APUSH class also uses the American Pagent book...)

I live in Texas and use American Pagent.

thanks CCers...i think the general consensus is AMSCO and REA...if anyone has any different opinions or would like to concur please post!

AMSCO is the best review book for APUSH. I had the American Pageant textbook but I didn't like it. It was humorous... but not concise enough. Look for the AMSCO review for APUSH. I got a 5 on the APUSH and I believe it was a combo of: having an awesome teacher, the AMSCO book, and thorough review in class and at some after school sessions. Good luck to all of you taking AP USH!!

P.S. Oh yeah, and I did have the REA review book too, but I didn't personally like it. The tests on the CDs were helpful for reviewing a few nights before the AP exam, but the actual review is VERY sparse and not detailed enough. The AMSCO book is FAR superior. Get both if you can. B/c the AMSCO's practice AP test is terrible. Use them both in combination. The m.c. questions after each AMSCO chapter are very much like the ones on the AP exam.

AMSCO

After having read a chapter in The Enduring Vision over The New South and the Last West, I have to say that it did a better job than the American Pageant. Bailey was TOO concise.

What is so good about REA?

It has all the info required for the exam.

REA does have all the info required on the exam, but the problem is that it has quite a bit more, too. For example, it gives a TON of military history and exactly 0 is required on the actual test. It also gives a bunch of statistics that are useless in themselves but helped me put everything together and get an idea of the big picture (which is pretty much what the APUSH test is looking for).

ustas: I go to a school in Colorado, how about you?

I still recommend both AMSCO and REA. For the reason, scroll up and read my previous post. It's a good combo provided you use them correctly and for the right purposes (REA: use the CD for practice tests, skim over material briefly before the exam; AMSCO: review for most of the 2nd semester, read each chapter and answer all the m.c. questions after each chapter - ignore the practice exam - it's laughable). That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Good luck!
