Apush scoring - have no fear

I've calculated AP US HISTORY scores for my practice test (1988), and I've discovered that the scoring is VERY lenient. I got 66 questions out of 80 correct, meaning I got 14 incorrect (I didn't omit anything). That, in itself, is a whopping 70 points. Considering that an AP score of 3 is = to 74+, if you manage to score around this much points on the MC, you can theoretically bomb all three essays and still get a 3. 70 points + (1 x 4.5) + (2 x 2.75) = 80
Now, do the math for yourself to confirm this. I just thought this was a neat thing to know, so you people who are prepared with the random MC questions, but are not that good at writing essays. You CAN still pass. All the calculations were made with the official collegeboard grading rubric equation thing. I found a nice link for you guys to experiment with, so you can establish your "worst" case scenario. Cheers, and good luck everyone!

Do you recommend answering/guessing all the questions? or skipping the ones you don’t know?

actually
the ap euro teacher at my high school
who grades aps
said that they will start being less lenient with the curves
instead theyre going to set a certain number for a 5
and do it that way
instead of doing it after & comparing everyones scores

I recommend you to certainly not blindly guess on question you know that you don’t have a good foundation of knowledge on. The 1988 test ask a question about the influence of rock and roll. I, as stupid as I am, randomly guess on it and what do you know, I got it wrong. Don’t make this mistake. Although there is a certain quota you have to make to earn a substantial amount of points. Raw score should be around 70 to achieve a 3, at least. So to answer your question, guess if you can eliminate 2 or 3 of the questions. If not, or only 1, try not to guess on it. Other than that, try to answer AS MANY as you can, IF you are aiming for a 5 that is.

Well koreanxpanda, college board will change it accordingly with statistics from past tests. They will not just blindly set an impossibly high amount of points. If they do, as you say, it will be with careful consideration to the past curves. And are you only strictly talking about getting a 5? Or are they upping the points for a 3 too?

Koreanxpanda, thank you for crushing all of my hopes for getting an easy 4/5 lol :P

But disregarding that news, yes, APUSH is lenient. I have REA’s APUSH Cram Course and you pretty much need 106/180 points, multiple choice being 90 points and the essays being another 90 points. So you can get a perfect score on the multiple choice and only need to get 16 points out of 90 on the essays lol.

Yeah! I hope that remains the scale for this one last year, if it is about to change. How’s the crash course anyway? I bought mine yesterday, and I’m on chapter 9.

It’s great, I love it! There are a lot of helpful tips and it really targets important areas.
I haven’t gone through all the review but I read the before and after sections on test-taking strategies and they sound pretty good. I just have a tendency to feel over-assured about taking tests though, lol. The book is a little bit too comforting, I might do worse than I think I’ll do lol.

I made a program on my calculator for this test last year. The scoring is the same.

Worst Case Scenario: 120
Best Case Scenario: 150

lol
