Arab Studies Major

Does AU have an Arab Studies Major?? I looked on their sight and I think it said it was only a certificate program, but then on collegeboard’s college search, it said it was a major, and I have seen others mention it as a major.

I’m confused >.<

Collegeboard’s list isn’t terribly accurate in many cases. AU has both a minor and undergraduate certificate in arab studies, and a minor in arabic language. Additionally, if you major in International Studies in the School of International Service, you can select the Middle East as an area of study, or Islamic Studies as a field of specialization. This may be what collegeboard is referring to.

You can find information on all of AU’s Middle East-related courses, degrees, and faculty on their Middle East Studies website - [Middle East Studies | American University, Washington, DC](http://american.edu/mes/)

Hope that helps!

That does help! Thanks!

<Do you know the maximum number of minors a student can take with and IS major (concentrating on the Middle East)? (I would try to make it a double major but…AU doesn’t have Israel Studies, Arabic, or Arab studies as majors). Would it be crazy to try to take all three? lol

Depending on how many credits you enter with (through AP, IB or something like that), you could definitely complete a number of minors in addition to the major. The major has a language requirement (which is practically like a minor because it’s in addition to the 70 or so credits you need for the major anyway), so you could take Arabic language for that. It would definitely be possible to complete Arab Studies and Israel Studies minors as well, especially as many of the core classes would likely overlap, especially if your area of focus in the major is either Islam or the Middle East.

There’s also a ton of study abroad options in the Middle East as well. I know we have programs in Egypt, UAE, Israel, Turkey, Morocco, and Syria (and that’s just off the top of my head, I’m sure there are others as well). I know there are also intensive summer language programs in Arabic (in Alexandria, Egypt), and Hebrew (Jerusalem, Israel). AU also offers language classes in Turkish and Persian.

Thank you!
