Arabic Scholarships

I am in a cracked out situation.

I am trying to study Arabic as an undergraduate degree. I went to NYU for a year, and was forced to leave for the outrageous lack of financial assitance they were giving my family, and also that you cannot gain full proficiency in Arabic from their degree.

I decided to apply to the UK. I applied to 5 schools but only 2 for straight Arabic (Pembroke College, Oxford and School of Oriental and African Studies, London). I currently hold an offer from SOAS and will hear from Oxford in a few weeks.

I am on a gap year, employed full-time and will be faced with my own private loans to study in the UK.. whcih I understand, it's fine.

However, all I keep hearing about is all of these monetary opportunities for student studying Arabic. I have looked around online and I see there are tons of scholarships floating about for Arabic majors, however most seem to only be for study abraod. At both Oxford and SOAS I will be spending a year in Egypt or Syria...

I am basically trying to ask if anyone knows of any sort of programs or scholarships that could possibly be applicable to me? I don't know how anyone would view studying 'abroad' for my whole undergrad degree.. but there seems to be so much funding out there.. and I desperately need it. Certainly someone would want to help an American learn Arabic at Oxford?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I know it's a very specific question but even a point in the general direction would be fantastic. thanks guys :)

Have you looked at:

The Language Flagship

And specifically: NSEP Boren Scholarships
Keep hunting; my DD did a short summer immersion program in Farsi. All students participating got room, board (generous stipend), books and instruction, plus free study abroad the following summer. Some other colleges were offering similar programs in ARabic - all funded trhough the strategic language initiative. try googling something like that.

What about Scholarships for Arabs or Muslims. Any of those at all?

There are plenty of scholarships for muslims. have you tried googling for some?

I'm actually neither Muslim nor of Arabic descent. I am actually a middle-class Irish Catholic from Jersey... so any scholarship would have be academic based.

Thanks for all your responses and replies though, I will look into some of those programs! :)

vtoodler I've tried googling but can't really find any. Could you help out, or give me a start?

Oh sorry.. I didn't see your post Sheed, thought vtoodler was directed to me. I have actually come across some scholarships specifically for Arabs and Muslims.. I will see if I can find them again and let you know.

Bump ?
