Hello! I am the first child in my family to begin to look at colleges and we do not know very much about scholarships. Does anyone know anything about scholarships available for students who are interested in foreign languages? I am interested in majoring in Arabic when I go to college. I have taken multiple language courses during high school. Here is my high school schedule for languages:

Grade 9: Latin II
Grade 10: Latin III & French I
Grade 11: Latin IV & German I
Grade 12: AP Latin, German III (skipped a level), French II

My guidance counselor told me my interest in languages is unusual and may benefit me when I apply to colleges and scholarships; however I do not know of any scholarships for high school students interested in foreign languages. Any help or advice as to where to look for such scholarships would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I am also an Irish American, practicing Catholic, and a die-hard conservative Republican. If anyone knows of any scholarships that are interested in students possessing these characteristics, I would appreciate any help.

Thank you so much!

Are you going to college in the fall, taking a gap year, still applying? Many scholarships are for a particular school or region. The best source is your college, then your high school or region. Many of the national ones are a lottery.

I’m sorry I should have clarified that. I am a junior in high school who is still looking at colleges. My high school does offer a scholarship from the Language Department for $300 and I know I will probably get that. Thanks for your advice.

Look up the schools that have a full program in the Arabic language and what the likely cost for you would be at those schools by running the NPCs and your family income/asset numbers. Figure out how much you and your family can pay towards college, by discussing this with your family.

There are a lot of schools that vary from Middlebury, Wellesley, highly competitive for admissions schools that meet full need but have top sticker prices to community colleges to lesser knowns schools that may come up with money if you have the numbers they want. Your SAT/ACT scores and grades will be the top determinant as to your chances of getting big awrds. A good bet would be Temple University if you have very good, but not great numbers. Not overly selective for acceptance, good merit for those who are up there in stats. The likelihood of you getting any scholarship for this is about zip unless you already are fluent or have made great inroads in studying Arabic already. Future plans of kids change all of the time. Went through this with nephew who was an Arabic major at Pitt for all of one term after he was so sure for several years that was what he wanted, even going to some prestigious summer programs including a Governor’s College for it. Pitt, by the way, does have a strong dept for the major. Do look at what courses a college has in the language. Some may sort of offer it as a major but not have the advanced courses for it NYU, for example, falls into that category.

What is your home state?

It seems like this might be available in a military academy setting, if that appeals to you.

Hi @cptofthehouse . Thank you for your insight, I did not know that Temple University and Pitt had very good programs for Arabic. I do not think my grades are sufficient enough for Wellesley, but I am in the top quarter of my class and was recently inducted into the National Honors Society. I have already planned on purchasing Rosetta Stone this summer to begin learning Arabic, as I have little time now because of AP exams coming in May. By the way, I live in New Jersey.

Hi @Debbie7452, I have been invited to apply to West Point and I may do so. Thank you for commenting, I probably should look at other military academies too.
