Architecture in CED to ChemE in CoC ASAP?

Hi, I was recently accepted to Berkeley for the fall term, but under Architecture BA in the College of Environmental Design. I originally chose this major because I was rushed to pick one(submitted my app on 11/30), and my dad told me it utilizes business, physics, and math, all subjects of which I love. He also told me that you don't need to draw well to excel in the field, but after further reading from the time I submitted my app, I've found this to be untrue.

Other reasons why I dislike Architecture BA would be from reading the following replies:

Just a reminder, the Berkeley architecture program is NOT an accredited professional degree (NOT a 5-year B.Arch. degree). If you want to be licensed, you will need to pursue graduate degree, or in CA I think you can practice under a licensed architect for 2 years and become eligible to sit for the licensing exam

Hello! I am a second year architecture major here at Cal and I can tell you that the first thing you should do is take an architecture class at a community college. The architecture program here is very demanding, even for Environmental Design 1, the first required course for students in the College of Environmental Design. I think before coming to Berkeley you should decide if you want to become an architect or want the degree. That said, it is easier for applicants of CED to get into Cal But just speaking from personal experience, studio classes are very demanding and really force you to learn how to manage time. You won't make it unless you really love it.

I have no love for Architecture at all, and really should have done my research before I put it on my app. ><

So I'm now wondering when would be the earliest time that I'd be able to switch to Chemical Engineering in the College of Chemistry. I know about the difficulties of courses like Chem 4A/4B, and that a significant amount of people leave CoC their first semester. I just don't want to fall behind other ChemE students, and I'm certain this is the major I want to pursue now.

Thanks!

You could probably switch during the summer orientation. I don’t think it would that hard, seeing as how our college could always use more students.

Ah, what a relief! Hrm, summer orientation, what about during CalSO?

Sorry, that’s what I meant. You can speak to the staff during CalSO to make the switch. Good luck with 4A. Boy, I know that class gave us hell for the first few months D:

You can apply to switch during CalSO. I remember a few people who tried to switch in from CoE and L&S during my CalSO. The CoC requires some basic stuff if you want to apply to transfer in, so bring along an official transcript, your essays that you used for your UC app, and generally most of your UC app to present to the appropriate faculty.

Darn, more people will be exposed to my dreadful essays, haha.

Man, I’m so excited for this switch. Thanks kemkid and Spontaneity.

Any chance I’ll be able to see you guys when I start life in CoC?

lol perhaps!

Oh and I also should mention that you should try to sign up for one of the three CalSOs that the CoC hosts. (When you sign up, you’ll see which colleges are hosting during each CalSO date). That way it’ll be a little easier, since then the CoC staff advisers will be out and ready to help. If you can’t sign up for those CalSO dates, you should still be fine. Just be sure to ask the CalSO staff on what to do.

Take a look here: [College of Chemistry - University of California at Berkeley - On Campus Transfers](http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/policies/change_of_college.php)

So yeah, be sure to tell Maura Daly (the freshman advisor) about your intention to change into the CoC. After I told her that I really knew that I wanted to switch into the CoC on Cal Day, she told me what to get into the college within a few weeks.

But good luck with Chem 4A to you and all incoming freshmen. If Head-Gordon is teaching again, you’ll get the most in-depth introduction to quantum chemistry ever. Also, the labs also contribute to the class’s notoriety.

No problem, Sagert! You might meet me one of these days, lurking around Latimer
If you’re doing ChemE, consider joining AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers). It’s a great club to get involved with ChemE students and faculty. And you might see me there as well :P

I wish you well with 4A. We had Head-Gordon, and he was amazing, even though half our class didn’t understand the quantum mechanics he taught :P

All my friends and I loved Head-Gordon and his teaching style.

You don’t have to sign up for CalSO, do you kemkid? And I thought CalSO was hosted only for a day on 4/17.

Looking at the Cal Day site, this is what I found:
