Are 4 classes, plus the Engineering Seminar and a Jazz Perf Ensemble doable?

If I register for 4 main classes (chem 218, math 155a, es140 and some LAC), and also the Engineering Seminar and try out for a Jazz Band Ensemble is that doable? Is that too much? Since I have AP credits in english for LAC, should I just not take a LAC? But then if I don't make the ensemble I will have too few credits. Any advice?

You should definitely take a LAC to knock out a core elective. If you have all of your core finished through AP credits, just take an easy/interesting class. That schedule is very doable, though I know nothing about Jazz Band and the time commitment that comes with that, you’ll figure it out as you go though. Just register and stop worrying haha.

Jazz Band ensemble is some place you may make friends and connect with Vandy’s very diverse music scene. You can always withdraw if it is too much to keep up with re rehearsals. The Symphony is pretty demanding since it has a lot of Blair students in competitive chairs. Our son auditioned and joined something freshman term and by winter realized that he was having trouble staying rested and up to date with his studies because weekend travel was required. He moved into other activities and relinquished his first one. Some people can multi task better than others. Gotta find your own biochemistry and needs for down time vs stimulation. Sleep is a challenge as a freshman with so many new friends, work to do and dozens of things to do on campus daily. Hope Jazz ensemble is super fun

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know whether AP Euro Hist or AP US Hist (with credit for “HIST NO EQUIVALENT: EUROPEAN HISTORY” and “HIST NO EQUIVALENT: U.S. HISTORY”) will count toward the engineering LAC? They don’t correlate to classes on the AXLE list (hence the “NO EQUIVALENT”), but they seem to fit within the b) and c) themes of the LAC. If not, is there any value to an engineering major in seeking credit for them?

I know US History certainly counts toward the “History and Culture of US” category of your liberal arts core. I don’t know about Euro.

Once you have declared your major and your AP credits are in, there’s a really cool feature on the YES homepage called “degree audit.” It shows everything required for your major, shows which requirements you have satisfied (and the specific credits that satisfy them), and lists every single course you can take that qualifies for the requirement. You’ll be able to use that to see if Euro counted for anything.

Thanks, Pancaked. You’ve been a great resource on this forum!

I agree. Thank you, Pancaked!
