Hey, I was just wondering whether alumni were randomly chosen (aside from location) in conducting interviews.

In my app I emphasized a lot my interest in film, and my interviewer was a lady who works at a performing arts center nearby, and she didnt seem like she was very experienced in interviews, so is it possible that someone saw my app, noticed a major i listed or an interest i seemed to show, and matched me with a random person, regardless of experience in interviewing, working in an artistic sort of field?

yeah. i would assume theyre random, but my situation made it a little odd, and someone else on this site, i think pre1321, also has an interviewer who is also a distance runner or something. just made it seem a little odd

I wondered the same...My interviewer grew up in the same state as my mom, works in a law firm (I put down pre-law as an interest), grew up listening to broadway musicals (me too!), his wife went to another college that I'm applying to (which was not on my app, but a coincidence nonetheless), he speaks fluently in French and has an adopted foreign child (my major is linguistics) ALSO, his kids went to the same school my friends from the summer went to (if that follows)...It was crazy how many things we had in common!!!

I noticed the same thing when I wondered why my friends who are applying EA from my school and I didn't get the same interviewer. I did a little research and found out that my alumnus worked on the Yale Daily and is now starting her graduate studies in journalism at Stanford, so I got to talk at length with her about that, since I hope to go into that field one day!

they can't be. It just like too much of a coincidence, maybe 1 or 2 people, but it's weird how many people have similarities with their interviewer

My interview is with a man whose kids go to a Quaker school, and he is on the Board there. I am a Quaker and I go to a Quaker school. Coincidence? Possibly, but I doubt it.

My interviewer was a lawyer. I put engineering and French down as my prospective majors. I think the only thing the guy and I had in common was the Yale thing: he is an alumnus, and i hope to be an alumnus. Don't get me wrong, the guy was REALLY nice and a pleasure to talk to.

Oh! And the president of his fraternity while he was at Yale was John Kerry! I couldn't believe it!

I volunteered for the Kerry campaign, and my interviewer was a political science major. Which isn't really that much of a shocking coincidence, but that we both have an interest in politics is something, I guess. (Although my guess is that a lot of Yale-types do.) Still, I think at least some of the local ASC directors probably try to pair interviewers and applicants with common interests when they can.
