Are Asian kids doing this much good?

Checking the distribution of SAT; top 3% of SAT takers in 2009 (1.5M) scores 2150 or better. Top 4% of white (851K) scores 2150 or better. Top 8% of Asian (158K) scores 2150 or better. So, about 1 in 4 of top 3% is Asian.

Now, is 1 in 4 of top students at a high school Asian? Or is it just in SAT test?

I don’t think there’re that many Asians in this country:]

if you go to Kansas or Oklahoma, you won’t find many Asians (or the deep south)

In my child’s HS, most of the top students are Asians.
They all have high GPAs (3.95+) and high test scores (2300+ or 35+).

Where did you get this data, is there a link for it?

Only whites and asians scored above 2150?

“They all have high GPAs (3.95+) and high test scores (2300+ or 35+).”

Every Asian has a 2300+ or a 35+? Is this a high school with one Asian who happens to be a very good student, or the most ridiculous high school ever?

I also want a link to data.

I am talking about the top Asian students at the high school.
Yes, it is one of the elite schools in the country.
Last year, more than two third of the Asian students from the high school went to top 20 colleges.

just because you have one school doesn’t mean the others are like it. <.< generlizaton FTL

“I am talking about the top Asian students at the high school.”

Considering “top” is pretty arbitrary, I don’t see the point in the statement.

“Last year, more than two third of the Asian students from the high school went to top 20 colleges.”

Honestly, I bet my high school was the same (assuming Michigan qualifies as top-20) and we had plenty of Asians who had merely a 2200/33.

Some collegeboard data

QwertyKey : I just sent you a PM.

? I didn’t get a PM?

Shrinkrap, thank you the links were useful. I still am not sure where the OP got data on the total scores (2150 being the 97 percentile) but all data seems to confirm the OP’s comments.

Also, I was a little confused by BTaverage and then realized he/she was talking about one school but the OP was talking about the whole set of test takers.

Should anyone who has been interested in college admissions in the last few years or has done reading on this area be surprised by the results. No, it in fact confirms a lot of the anecdotal data that we hear about.

I wouldn’t be surprised. But we’re talking about the overall high school population, not the population of any given high school. At Iolani School in Hawaii, the proportion of top students who are Asian would be much higher – but then, a high percentage of the students at Iolani are Asian. In contrast, in some rural areas in the middle of the United States, there are plenty of high schools with zero Asians.

Here is data on the total scores.

This is coming from a black student:

Asian students, by far, are superior students to any other ethnic group. Why? Because of culture, not because of DNA. They work harder and in many Asians cultures, children are expected to get good jobs to support their intermediate family (parents). So getting these high scores does NOT surprise me in the least.

^Are you a student of anthropology? Genetics? Culture? Education? You speak with mire authority than I am used to, and I’ve been studying this for 25 years.

Oh, and this is coming from a black Child Psychiatrist.

^^^

I don’t have to be. Just look up the stats. Asians dominate all around. Asian students in general are more disciplined, more goal oriented, whereas black and hispanic students are barely getting through high school, let alone master college.

And this is coming someone who is studying Chinese and has worked with PLENTY of Asian students. They will all tell you the same. Failure isn’t an option, especially at the rates international students are charged to go to American colleges.

So what are you studying? Granted, I did not go far into statistics, but it’s my impression that things are rarely as simple as they seem. Still, I’m glad you have it all figured out.
