Are Azn's inherently smarter?

Stupid in America is a very intriguing documentary that is somehwat relevant to our topic.

I completely agree with people who have been saying that the Asian population in America is the cream of the crop. Granted, this does NOT mean that they have the highest IQ or are the wealthiest. Yes, there are Asian immigrants who came over and had little more than a suitcase, if even. BUT, the fact remains that they had the motivation to find a way over in search of better opportunities, thus instilling in their children the same drive to achieve and take full advantage of whatever resources they have.

"Stupid in America"-- what does it talk about?

I find discussions over topics like this tiring. Everyone can succeed given the circumstances (Still currently there lacks statistics of white children adopted by Asian parents).

Additionaly, even if asians are inherently smarter. What are we going to do? Further racism by continuing to identify people by their race (black history month for example, affirmative action).

Why are Asians so hardworking? Its not because all Asian Americans are the creme of the crop. Asians realize in our country as minorities, without connections like WASPs, often latently discriminated against, in order to suceed, they have to perform extra well to even be considered in work, applications, etc.

You can look at Bill Cosby's Ghettosburg Address where addresses the fact that many blacks have forgotten their sacrifices during Civil Rights Movement and deprioritizing of education that has nothing to do with ones' genes.

On the random side note, I find this article interesting. What do you think? I'm not too sure whether it exists here in the US.
http://en.wikipedia.org/Asian_fetish

Hm. The link doesn't work.

I think its pretty strange. But you know with stereotyping things like these can happen.

Working link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_fetish

Asians are not inherently smarter..Its just that their parents push them harder, do not tolerate mediocre grades, etc.

It's a cultural thing. Asians in general are known to be hard workers who pay extreme attention to detail. Hence, the high quality products that we get from that hemisphere.

It's culture.

Yeah, I agree. It's culture. I'm Asian, and I don't have a high IQ (well, it wasn't high enough for me to make G.T.) but my academics are splendid so far. It's because my Mom's side of the family (Filipinos) has so much determination and work hard in order to make things better for themselves in a poverty-stricken world. That ambition and determination inspires me to work hard also. So when most think of smart, successful Asians they think of "Chinese" or "Japanese", right? Indonesians, Filipinos, Malasians, etc. aren't what you'd first think of. At least from what I read in that wikipedia entry that Southeast Asians aren't included in the stereotype.

The average IQ of east asians is over 105. The average IQ of southeast asians is under 90... big difference

y raise this thread from the dead?

did any of you even read it?

dooit: appalled where in the world did you get that info?!

Because this thread is interesting to me, I shall post. From the Wikipedia article about "Asian Fetish", they claim we (well, I'm Taiwanese, so...) are "asexual and threats to white women". Hey guys, when did we become a threat to white women? I wonder if my caucasian girlfriend agrees. But didn't they say the same thing about black men way back in Colonial times? Why do you think there were so many repressive laws against them, hmmn?

So back to the point: I live in Bangok, Thailand. NEVER have I seen anyone refer to an Asian person as "AZN". I find this "ghettofication" most disagreeable. And I don't understand why people of Asian descent (especially the boys) who move to the US, tend to pick up the gangsta persona. Does that fit them better? I don't know.

Personally, I think anyone can achieve anything if nobody tries to stop them. That is, including society. American society as mentioned tends to idealize all the strangest things. Including the "gangsta" lifestyle. When will we idolize the girl who builds robots in the machine shop, or the boy who covers the board with beautiful equations. Not too soon, I don't think.

But yes, there are people who respect that. Asian families do. Being smart may not be "cool" per se, but it's definitely something good. Sure there will be always be nerd-ridicule in every society, but we realize the importance of hard work. That and our parents will totally kick our asses if we don't.

That, and I need to complain about the fact that no black students applied to USA/Canada Mathcamp. Maybe they did, but none got in. But why? Is it because their culture thinks math is uncool? Or not worth doing? If that's so, and success in those subjects translate to smart, then who are we to blame for other people not loving these subjects enough?

I say culture plays a bigger part, not genetics. I mean, sure you could say genetics because if the parent's are smart, then...it's a good chance the kids will be too. 50% of intelligence is from genetics and the other half is environment.
I'd say Asian-Americans are more likely to be more driven and goal-oriented because they are just that, Asian-Americans, and they want a piece of the pie so to speak and they want a better life.
If I spent less time on the internet and less time avoiding homework and studying then I'm sure my grades would be a tad bit better. I have a 3.7 and I bet if I improved my studying habits, I'd have a 4.0.
So....I'd say culture plays more of a part than genetics.

I never study and I have a 3.9 :D

Me study? Nah...

I still manage to maintain a 3.9

Cryptopath, I'd say that more times than not, African-Americans are more likely to live in poverty and do you really expect kids living in poverty to excel at math? I know I couldn't if all I thought about was if I will have a roof over my head, why I am so hungry, etc.
I am African-American and I am not THE best at math but I won't say I'm horrible at it. I'm definitley not a Geometry person but I exceled at Algebra I. I'm in Geometry and in the 10th grade. I'm not AS bad off as I could be. There are kids at my school in the 10th grade who chose or HAD to take Algebra I in a matter of 2 years...and soem of them are still in the 1st part...meaning they flunked the first part and must take it again.
THEN you have the black kids who are in Trig. It doesn't necessarily mean they're smart or whatever because some of them have Ds and Fs in Trig.
I am much better dealing with words and things of that nature. I have an....A in my Geometry class and here lately I have been making high Cs so...I work hard for my A.

As a black person, I am aware of the apathy of a lot of African-American teens when it comes to college. Sure a lot of them know it's important but knowing it's important and actually applying yourself to get to college are two different things.
My parent's didn't stress college a lot to me, I was the one who did. They let me know it was important but trust me, I STRESSED it. I started making a list of what college I wanted to go to in 5TH!!!! grade. I'm just nerdy like that.
Math has never been my strongpoint...but I wouldn't call it a weakness. In 7th grade, my pre-algebra teacher taught STRICTLY from the book and would show NO alternatives to it. She went on maternity leave and we had a sub, while he was there, I got it more but once my regular teacher returned, I just...stagnated.
So....I changed school districts in 8th grade and I had to repeat Pre-Algebra even though I made C's in Pre-Algebra in 7th grade...in 8th grade, I made straight As all through Pre-Algebra and all of my other classes. 9th grade, straight As all through Algebra and now in Geometry, so far I've made straight Bs and I now have an A. I owe all my current success in math to my 8th grade pre-algebra teacher. If I had stayed in my current school district, I probably would be lost but they would keep moving me along. So....it's a mixed blessing. I may be behind some but...it could be worse and I could be ahead but I wouldn't know what I was being taught.

man u ppl killing this thread and its making my eyes bleed

did any of u read this thread or the older azn dating threads?

all the ppl saying its culture need to understand this: in america, ppl of different races often live in the same building (even same unit), go to the same skool, have the same jobs, use the same money, public toliet, telephone system, spoken language, shopping centers, and streets

their is no ur culture my culture, no person or group of persons is inherently smarter by heredity, culture, work, or luck

if u believe one person to be superior to another, u seriously underestimated one of them. u seriously underestimated urself

Damn these chapter long posts!
