Are club sports basically like high school sports teams?

What I mean by that is do they just practice on days they dont have games and compete with other schools when they arent practicing. Do any club sports ever teach a person new to the sport how to play and the basics? Im guessing it depends on the sport? I looked at a lot of the sports that I would be interested in on the club sports page and a lot of them seem to have try outs, are competitive (compete with other schools) and are for those who have experience in the sport already. Im just looking for sports I can play for fun and learn the rules if I`ve never played the sport before.

You are looking for intramurals, not club sports

Oh wow thank you.

IM sports are great, and you should def check out ones that interest you! Awesome way to meet people and have fun. Don’t completely rule out all club sports, though! My student knew nothing about the club sport (Taekwondo) that she signed up for at the Involvement Fair last year, had never done martial arts of any type. They welcomed her in along with several other beginners. They practice 5 days a week (about 10 hours) and she competed in several meets throughout the year and even moved up a couple of belts. Great group of people, being on the TKD team has been a huge part of her success and happiness at Penn State. They were thrilled to welcome in more beginners this year along with some freshmen who are highly trained already. All levels welcome, as the meets have competition for all levels of skill and training. Most club sports and IM teams have a social component as well, which is really fun. Enjoy!

It definitely depends on the school and the sport. My daughter’s club team accepts beginners, but my niece played on a club team that competed at a high level and many on the team could have played on D1 teams if they had wanted to. Some schools don’t have a varsity team in that sport and the club teams are quite competitive and there is a national ranking for clubs and a championship.
