Are my chances better as a Day student or Boarder??

Of the schools I'm applying to, at two I could be a day student or a boarder. Would my chances of getting in be better if I were a boarder vs. day student.

P.s - I need full financial aid

A boarder needs more FA than a day student, and a boarder needs a dorm room. You do the math…

This will vary by school. For example, at my son’s school, which is about 50/50 boarding/day, the admit rate last year was slightly higher for day students. You may be able to find this information on a school’s website by looking for the “Profile of Previous Admitted Class” or something similar. You can also try calling the school and asking; some schools will be upfront about it.

The rate can also vary for boys and girls at a school, but this information may be harder to find.

As for FA, the need for this won’t affect your admittance at a need blind school.

Okay. Thank you. Looking at the profiles really helped.

In a typical boarding school it is harder to get in as a day student because there aren’t as many spots. However, most schools are usually more generous with financial aid with boarders because it is more expensive to physically live there.

The day admission pool will vary by location. Some “rural” schools don’t have a lot of qualified applicants within commuting distance, whereas others, such as Lawrenceville and Peddie, probably have lower admit rates overall because of the abundance of day applicants. I am a big fan of asking questions like these to schools directly because it most likely does not hurt to ask and the answer is more accurate than what you can get here on CC.
