Hi, I’m a sophomore in high school and I’m currently choosing classes for junior year. Choosing classes is always stressful for me and now that I have an idea as to what college I’m aiming for, it’s even harder to tell if my classes are good enough. I want to go to Emory University and that seems far fetched as it is a COMPETITIVE school, however, it is my goal. Sophomore year I am taking; honors chemistry, honors english, honors geometry, honors US history, intermediate 2D art, and spanish 3 (no honors option). Junior year I have chose to take; AP biology, AP world history, honors pre calculus, honors english, honors spanish 4, honors 2D art, and sports medicine 1. Finally senior year I am planning on taking; AP calculus AB, AP 2D art, AP spanish 5, AP european history, honors physics (no honors option), chem II (no honors or AP option), and honors english. Since that’s a full schedule senior year, I will also be taking morning gym to fit all of that in. What do you think? I feel like I may burn myself out but if I do anything less than that, I feel like my schedule will be way too easy. I want to challenge myself. I don’t have a SAT score quite yet but other than that those are my planned classes. Please let me know!
The rigor is fine. You are not going to be penalized for not having AP classes if your school doesn’t offer them.
However, why two sciences senior year? Are you trying to fill a requirement or is one of them a particular topic of interest to you?
Verify with your guidance counselor that s/he will check the “most demanding” box for your schedule on the common app. Sometimes they will have some specific class, e.g. AP Art History, that they require for “most demanding”.
Honors physics is a recommended class for most seniors at my school and chem II best suits my interest as it covers organic chem and organic chem is apart of the field I’m interested in getting involved with (physician’s assistant). Thanks for responding! Knowing I won’t get penalized makes me feel much more comfortable. Do you think that art is okay? I really enjoy art so I assumed they wouldn’t frown upon it since it’s something I enjoy.
Huh, interesting, I had no clue you could do that. Thank you!
Art is fine! A few colleges actually have a fine arts requirement.
Yes, art is fine and by taking it through AP level you show a great level of commitment and dedication, which colleges appreciate.
