I just wanted some input on my extracurriculars because for the past three years, I've been unable to participate in traditional clubs or sports because of serious family obligations, so I could only pick up a few things here and there...

Model UN (Best Delegate award, Northeastern University, Harvard University)

Internship Dell/Verizon, tested out computer programs that would be implemented in different Massachusetts high schools that following year (for the science and history classes). Some may say "guinea pig" - I say, ... pioneer. lol.

Representative for City Year Boston

Citywide Math Enrichment Tutor

NLE Participant

Key Club

Babysitting (five days a week, 30 weeks a year)

Worked with city gov't to work out a budget for the school which wouldn't sacrifice our arts program - was able to showcase this community service project in Boston at a conference

Couple of local essay competitions - Freshman year, had a piece about the American Dream published in local newspaper, Junior year, had a satire piece about the war on drugs published in school newspaper

Artwork featured in city wide art show

AP Scholar with Honor

Next year, I'm going to found and run our school's first Latin club

...thoughts?

Do you even lift, brah?

Sorry, all I saw was weak

Nah those are good enough for non HYPSM schools. Write good essays and have good tests and GPA and stuff.

Don’t listen to people on CC and especially not on the Chances threads if they tell you these are weak. I think these ECs are pretty stellar, especially where you worked with your city government. Colleges LOVE that.

Not sure if this is some kind of false modesty thread or what, but no, they’re not weak. Internship? Working with city government? I didn’t even realize until recently that it’s possible to do that stuff in high school.

@halyconheather - all of these things, for the most part, aren’t consistent. They’re one day/one week/one month events, that happen, and then are followed by months of inactivity because of my family obligations. In my entire Junior year, all I had was a one day MUN conference and an in-school essay competition win. That was literally it. That’s what worries me, because there’s a big difference between being in Mock Trial, and consistently winning awards and going to conferences, and going to a single MUN conference, winning, and then just not doing anything after.

Will these be explained somewhere in your applications?

Apparently there’s a part of the Comm. application that allows the applicant to discuss “family responsibilities” but I pulled up a PDF of last years Common App, and I couldn’t find it. I hope there is.

Find a way to boost your community service hours and then they are fine.
