i am very discouraged because I got a 2080 on my SAT's (600 V, 770 M, 710 W)....do you think I will just be straight out rejected because of my very very poor verbal score?

I hope not. I have the same scores (740V, 620M, 720W). Did you have a legitimate reason for not scoring higher? I did, so I asked my counselor to explain my scores. Anyway, I bet a lot of people will say we don't stand a chance, but you never know. I feel really good about my application/essays, so I'm keeping my hopes up. Good luck to you. :)

Princess, it's impossible to give a yes or no answer to your question. There are way too many other factors in admission. If your profile is otherwise strong, your score would not be enough to automatically reject you. My D was accepted EA with a SAT = 2080 and a lowish CR score. However she has many other things going for her that obviously outweigh the test scores.
Good luck.

I had lower scores (2070), with a rather poor performance in the writting (640)

The key to getting in, in my opinion and with others that I have talked to that got in, is being able to present yourself as a person. I don't think they expect you to have the highest test scores, to be a perfect little soldier on paper.

They want to know what you would contribute on campus and why that is different from what I am going to give, what roomates are going to give, etc.

Test scores don't guarantee success, so don't doubt yourself because of a score. Work real hard on getting teachers, counselors to give you recommendations that speak of you and what you've done to help others and yourself succeed in life. I find it probably a cause for concern when they can only speak of your accomplishments.

Your essays must show YOUR voice. It must show your emotions, your struggles, your depth of understanding of your own soul.

That's my advice. Your test scores are great in comparison to many in the country, don't let a 2400 from somebody else hang you up. Be proud of what you and your hard work accomplished and show it on your essays and on your recommendations.

That's always the most important thing, always be true to yourself :)

That's interesting Ferny Reyes, I got the same exact writing score. My SATs totalled out to a 2100 (800 V, 660 M, 640 W)

i have a friend this year, who had a 2080, and who got the same verbal score as you, and she got into Stanford EA

check out my thread, Musings about the SAT

I have a 700v, a 700w, and a 660m :( its a 2060 all together but its not lopsided like all of yours are, it just sucks all around. oh well. im a junior so i can improve.

You won't be straight out rejected at all. They'll look to other items in your application, and if your other academic credentials check out you'll definitely still be in the running.

plus, browse through ED forums in places like hopkins and columbia

i actually saw a person with a 1270 on the old sat get into hopkins on that forum, i think

One has to be very careful here listening to advice given.
Most of people who got in with rather low SAT score are URMs. If I recall correctly, Yomama's D is an URM. You better have something extra if your SAT is around 2100.

your math and writing are in the range (25-75 %) for yale, so you're fine

no point in agonizing. the sat is just one part of the broader application.

and no, i honestly don't believe you'll be flat-out rejected bcz of the sat scores

I certainly don't think that your scores warrant an immediate rejection. What else do you have going for you that might compensate i.e. a great class rank, superb GPA, higher scores on SAT IIs or APs in literature/English, crazy good ECs? I know that you know there's more to an admission than SAT scores, and though I do understand how easy it is to get tripped up on the one thing that holding you back, logically it doesn't make a lot of sense to worry too much about one minute detail, since that one minute detail probably isn't what's going to decide your admission or rejection.

If I were you I wouldn't fret too much about the verbal score. Find the silver lining. It could've been worse. You could've gotten a 500.
