Are NC State's admissions messed up

I was originally was going to send an email to their undergraduate admissions asking about this, but I realised it was rude to compare them to other schools in an email.

I was looking at the admissions statistics for NC State and their honors college. I am very confused. It’s weighted GPA average is significantly higher than that of any college I have found yet, yet the ACT average is about the same.

For example
Harvard: ACT: 34, GPA: 4.01
MIT: ACT: 34, GPA: 4.13
NC State ACT: 28, GPA: 4.42

The GPA requirements for the honors college are 4.6 GPA, or 3.9 unweighted (ACT 30).

Looking at the CS department this is their data for who gets accepted
GPA: 4.29-4.81
SAT (eading and math only) 1213-1401
4.81! I have seen that like once while looking at MIT admissions results threads. Anyone with a GPA over 4.5 usually has an astronomical SAT as well.

From what I have seen these numbers dont make sense. No other school has GPA averages like that, and their ACT average really isnt that high.

What is going on here? Do GPA’s work differently in North Carolina?

I still cant work out what is going on here.

GPAs in NC are different. (although it is in the process of changing)

Very simply, an “A” in an AP class is a 6.0, an “A” in an honors class is a 5.0. It really does skew the numbers. You will see this if you look at the stats for any NC school.

That makes much more sense! Thankyou!
