Are NHS and Science Honors clubs or honors?

In the common app, there is a place where it wants you to name any honors that you have received and gives national merit, and cum laude society as examples.

On the other it wants you to list extracurricular activities and clubs.

So my question is: is National Honor Society considered an honor or club?
I don't know which to write where, so any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by “Science Honors,” but I consider NHS an extracurricular.

Well, there’s this thing called science honor in our school. You can join if you meet the GPA and AP class requirements. Once you’re in, you get a certificate that says “Excellence in Science”
I’m pretty sure its considered an honor but wasn’t sure about NHS.

Depends on what your school’s NHS does. If you guys do community service, it’s a club. If it’s just membership with no activity (yet), it’s an honor. Also, you can put this in whichever section so as to make your application look fuller. Ex: if you only have 4 awards, put NHS as an honor to completely max out the Honors space. If you have 6 activities, put NHS as a club.

Can I put it both as honor and a club?
We don’t do community service together or anything but we are required to do 20 hours each semester on our own if we still want to be members.

That’s really more of a club. I wouldn’t double up–counselors understand NHS and what it means to be a part of it.

What Wej said. I personally put it as an honor because we havn’t done any community service at all. In your case, it sounds more like an activity/club. If you repeat your activities in another section, it may sound like you’re trying to pad your resume and in some cases, may be a turn off for admission officers.
