I know the common app says you should put NHS as an honor. At my school, however, it's more of an activity. We have to do about 80 hrs of school-related community service per year, and I have a pretty time-consuming leadership position. Is there a place where I can put this info? Or should I just put NHS in the activity section instead? Thanks!

I would put it in the activity section. NHS at my school is like yours.

There is plenty of room in the honors section to say ‘NHS: Requires 80 service hrs /yr’

There is certain academic requirement to be eligible as member in NHS. So you may consider it as an honor although there is a commitment for community service as well. You may put that in either place. Nevertheless, I would not leave the honor section empty if you don’t have other things to put in there.

Due to the broad nature of NHS participation (academic requirements and service requirements) I think you should list it in both areas. Definitely list it in the Honors section, but you can list any organizations you might perform service hours with (our D2 is doing Habitat for Humanity) in the Activities section.
