Are Octopus lamps a dnager??

on another CC forum someone stated that their school prohibited the Octopus lamps from BBB last year = yet Ithaca BBB and Target were selling them like crazy this past week - the ones with the plastic shades - anyone know anything?

If you let the plastic shades touch the bulbs, they burn and melt. They dont catch on fire but I am sure that the smouldering plastic can present a fire hazzard. We bought 2 floor lamps that hold 2 150 watt bulbs each (we got 100 watt bulbs) They have the round ceiling projecting glass bowls on them. Her 21.5 x14.5 ft room is extremely bright now.

hey, i am up at cornell and my ra said that as long as there weren't more than 5 "tentacles" and the wattage of the bulb was under the recommended max, then they are okay.

thanks. As a mom, I have to worry about something, right?and my d already had either a fire drill or false alarm yesterday! so, at least she knows how to get out of the building...

erm, there are tons of fire drills over the course of a year. I remember last year in Mews there was one at around 3am when it was below freezing outside. About 300 kids had to run out of the dorms in their PJs and a few without any shoes to go into Appel or RPU for about 15 minutes. It wasn't that pleasant. But it's all about safety, and I've never heard of a fire from octopus lamps.

don't put all your light bulbs in, pick 2 or 3 colors you like and take off the rest of the bulbs...
it shoudl be bright enough
